Quick info
About Rustique Restaurant
Rustique Restaurant is a French restaurant at 28 Castlegate in York, set across an upstairs room and a downstairs seating area with window seats at the front. The menu leans into classic French cooking, with French onion soup as a must-try starter alongside frogs legs and mussels. A set menu runs alongside the main list and features dishes such as crepes and duck, and the kitchen also prepares other French staples across the courses. Service runs on a reservation-only footing, so the dining room is planned in advance rather than left to walk-ins. A wait is common at busy times, and the lower floor can turn noisy when the room fills. The cooking and the room itself give the place its identity, with the upstairs and downstairs layout offering two different settings for the same menu.

Customer Review Summary
The French onion soup is the clear draw, with multiple diners calling it packed with umami, deep, and velvety smooth, and several urge trying the mussels and duck alongside it. Solo diners describe feeling welcomed, and reviewers note booking ahead helps, as the downstairs room offers a quieter seat when upstairs gets noisy, though one diner found the space loud.

“I popped in one weekday lunch time during the summer holidays. The prices were very good and the portions sizes were decent. The upstairs area sounded quite busy so I opted for a window seat down stairs. The staff were warmly welcoming, and were happy to accommodate my solo visit and requests. They were attentive to my needs. I decided to try the frogs legs to start followed by the French onion soup, of which, OMG, you really really need to try the onion soup. It was packed with Umami, such a deep but velvety smooth, rich stock. I will definitely coming again when im next in York, to try some other French classics.”
- Wong Angel
“Onion soup was superb! Must try the mussels. Super good deal for weekdays, €29 for 3 courses.”
