About Millers Fish & Chips

Trading since 1940, Millers Fish & Chips is a fish and chip shop at 55 The Village in York, the original Haxby location. The menu runs from jumbo haddock and chips to a fish and chip burrito filled with homemade tartar sauce and fried batter scraps, and chips can come with curry sauce. A counter handles orders to take away, and a separate dine-in area serves those who stay. The shop opens Tuesday to Saturday and closes on Mondays and Sundays. It gets busy at peak times, with a short wait even when full. A van also visits Pool Bridge Farm.

Customer Review Summary

Crispy, not-oily batter on the haddock and chips is what most reviewers praise, with the jumbo haddock described as meaty and flavourful and the chips called just right. Close behind is the chicken loaded chips, noted for crispy fried chicken and a sriracha mayo, while the fish and chip burrito with homemade tartar sauce and crispy scraps drew a rave from one diner. Curry sauce and salt and pepper panko squid rings also earn mentions. The caveat is consistency. One longtime customer found the loaded chips hard, with a fishy taste and next to no sauce, and says recent orders have slipped. Another reports the loaded chips at two thirds of the usual portion and a fish burger at a third of its normal size. Even so, reviewers describe friendly staff who smile and greet them, and one notes being apologised to for the wait that then proved short on a busy night.

“Never tried Millers Fish n Chips before but took the opportunity when their van called into Pool Bridge Farm as I heard they were decent. Well, I wasn’t disappointed as I’ve had a lot of fish n chips over my many years of living and can truly say they are up there with the best. Lovely tasty crispy batter and it’s not often the chips are perfect as well as it’s normally one or the other I’ve found. However, I found both to be spot on, as was their curry sauce, so therefore I highly recommend them, thank you! Oh, I forgot to take a photo as I scoffed them too quickly, then remembered, but it was too late.”

“I’m really disappointed to be writing this because Millers has always been our reliable go to, but the standard has definitely slipped recently. The last couple of orders haven't been great, but tonight was a real letdown. We always get the chicken loaded chips, but this evening the chips were hard, made from poor-quality potatoes, and had a distinct fishy taste to them. There was also next to no sauce, which usually makes the dish. It seems like consistency has become a real issue lately it really shouldn't depend on what night or time you order to get a decent meal. We’ve given it a fair few chances, but after tonight, we’ll probably be looking elsewhere for our weekend takeaways. Such a shame for a place that used to be so consistent.”

“Whoever runs this place clearly has their head screwed on the right way as I cannot fault this place one bit. We've eaten from here a few times and it has always been perfect. The fish is always cooked perfectly, no bones and delicious crispy batter. The chips are always just right and the miller's signature fried Chicken in particular is outstanding. On top of the food, the service is impeccable. We're always apologised to for the wait, but the wait is never very long at all even when it's really busy. Staff are always very friendly and efficient. I don't see any reason to get fish and chips from any other place in York now that we've been here, so I would recommend it to all.”

“Busy bustling fish n chips shop, was amazed how many delivery lads on mountain bikes were delivering. The fish was lovely and a good size, chips good and, peas n curry. Definitely worth a visit, you will not be disappointed!”

“Went in on Good Friday, it was crazy busy but they were doing an amazing job. The food was delicious as always. Special shout-out to the young man who served us on the till (didn't get his name but he was tall with a brown ponytail and deep voice) He was really polite, friendly and so calm under pressure on what was a very busy night. Very good at his job!”
