About The Wenlock Arms

The Wenlock Arms is a pub at 73 Main St in Wheldrake, York, reopened after a full refurbishment inside and out. The bar is new, and so are the tables and chairs. Real ales, lagers and a range of spirits are served at the bar. The kitchen cooks food from Wednesday to Sunday, and the plated Sunday roast anchors the weekend. Themed nights add variety for those who want something specific: burger night on Thursday, a steak night, and a visiting fish and chip van. The pub takes walk-ins.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often single out the fish and chips, ordered alongside the gammon and scampi by one party and rated highly by another. Close behind are the sirloin steak, with one reviewer suggesting the peppercorn sauce on the side, the steak pie, and a Sunday lunch with generous portions. Others name the garlic mushrooms, the rosemary and sea salt fries, and a quinoa salad that suited a reviewer with dietary requirements. The chocolate brownie and cheesecake earn praise for dessert. The food does not please everyone. One group found the pizzas not that good and a toasted sandwich overdone, and another reviewer called the meal OK, nothing special. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and attentive without rushing anyone, and the atmosphere comes up as warm and welcoming. Drinkers mention a great selection of beers, plus burger night, steak night and a fish and chip van. One reviewer notes their dog was made to feel as welcome as the diners.

“Excellent food. THE best garlic mushrooms I've ever eaten. Rosmary and seasalt fries were just perfect. Simple food yes, but done with perfection. Lovely staff too. Surroundings are very pretty. I'm giving this place a 10! (Out of 10)”

“Just visited today for the first time. The landlord/host was a very pleasant chap easy to chat with, super helpful and polite. The place is very well kept and to a high standard. The choice of foods for someone with dietary requirements was brilliant. All freshly prepared and superbly delicious....I recommend the quinoa salad 😋. If you are ever in the area you must check it out. I know if we are passing by on our travels we most certainly will!!!”
