About Lendal Cellars

Lendal Cellars is a Greene King pub at 26 Lendal in York, set in an 18th Century storage cellar with brick arches. Steps lead down from the street-level entrance to a room with coved ceilings. The bar pours cask ales, wines, spirits, cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks. The food menu includes steak and ale pie and gammon with chips, plus sharing plates for the table. Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return most to the atmosphere of the brick-arched cellar, reached by steps down from a modest entrance, with several calling it cool, stunning, and unlike any pub they had visited. Food comes second. Diners praise the steak and ale pie and the scampi with chips and peas as hot and tasty, along with the sharing plates and a Valentine's meal described as fabulous, though one calls the mains very nice but not stunning. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and helpful, with one server called brilliant. The complaints are specific. One reviewer found the gammon and chips undercooked and the food apparently reheated, and mentioned a waiter's body odour that put them off eating. Others note very tatty seats, no phone signal underground, bad Wi-Fi, and service a touch slow when busy. Several found it quiet, and one found it absolutely dead. One visitor, on a hot summer day, enjoyed a quick drink in the cool cellar.

“The Food was mostly ok, although appeared to have been reheated. The Gammon and chips were undercooked. It's a beautiful, cool and quirky venue that has so much potential, but sadly it was absolutely dead inside. The staff were very friendly and helpful, but every time our waiter approached and left our table, his BO wafted in the air, and put us off our food, extremely unpleasant. He was very nice man and attentive host though. This place has enormous potential, very cool cellar and nice terraced beer garden.”

“It is a lovely quiet place on a Wednesday evening to chill and have a relaxing meal after a long day sightseeing. The food, "Steak and Ale pie chips and peas along with scampi chips and peas" was hot, well prepared and tasty. The service was polite and attentive. I would definitely revisit when I am back in York.”

“Cant comment on the food, as I did not eat. It was a Thursday afternoon, so the atmosphere was pretty quiet, but wasn't a problem. The pub itself is a must visit, never been in one like it. Only problem i have is could do with a makeover,as the seats we were sitting on were very tatty.”

“Our first visit here. Great bar. Quiet when we visited, but had only just opened. The lady behind the bar serving us was very friendly and prompt with all customers. We found the sharing plates to be a good selection and priced reasonably. We really enjoyed the food we had, very tasteful, served hot, served quickly. Would recommend a visit.”

“You feel like you are going back in time when you walk through the door. From a rather inconspicuous entrance stairway you descend into an old storage cellar - which must been many hundreds of years old. Strangely for a slightly hidden away front door- it's always quite busy and welcoming. Greene King have owned it for a while, so the normal crowd pleasers for beer and food. Staff are lovely and enjoy working there. A nice place to quietly pass the time. Just be aware, being underground there is no phone signal and the Wifi is really bad, the only downside. But to be fair, the original designers probably didn't anticipate mobile phone addicts when it was originally built”
