Customer Review Summary

Pies draw the most praise, with reviewers describing a steak and ale pie with golden, crisp pastry, mushy peas and homemade gravy, a braised beef and ale pie of the day that was tasty and moist, and a cheese and onion pie with gravy. Close behind are the fish and chips with flaky fish in light batter, the rotisserie chicken, a salmon with a crisp exterior, spiced grilled halloumi and the mussels starter. One diner calls the sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream the show stopper. Sunday lunch splits opinion. One reviewer found the beef fatty and chewy, with only two roast potatoes and dry Yorkshire puddings, while another loved a veggie roast and a trio of meats that melted in the mouth. A 1.2kg pork knuckle with soggy crackling, and stale bread beside the pate, disappointed another table. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and attentive, and the pub is described as cosy, busy and lively, with a decent selection of local ales. One reviewer notes the water and dog biscuits offered to their dog.

“Very disappointed with our Sunday lunch. I ordered the beef expecting a decent meal, but unfortunately it was the complete opposite. The beef was extremely fatty and chewy, to the point where I wasn’t sure whether I had been served a child’s portion or an adult meal. The roast potatoes consisted of only two, and there was one carrot with two pieces of turnip, all covered in red cabbage. There was no mash potato at all. For the price, the portion, quality and overall standard of the food simply did not reflect what I would expect from a Sunday roast. The beer was honestly the best thing we ordered. Unfortunately, the service was also disappointing. We were never asked if everything was okay, whether we needed any mustard, or if we wanted anything else. The food was brought to the table and, after we left most of it, nobody came back to check on us. I won’t even start on the gravy, but the Yorkshire puddings were also extremely dry, with hardly a drop of gravy between them. Overall, a very disappointing experience, especially considering the price. I expected much better and would hope the restaurant takes this feedback on board.”

“Very much enjoyed popping in here. It was busy and livley but all good and a good mix of families and friendship groups. Staff were helpful and seating, although tight, was good. Didn't eat here but the food did look good. Decent selection of local ales.”

“Just been here, and my hubby wanted to try this pub, and I must say though we wasn't overall impressed with the food, though I think it might be down to the reason we was on of the last tables, I did enjoy the lamb and my chicken pate, my hubby had this 1.2kg pork knuckle which he said was dry. The crackling soggy, the meat wasn't juicy. And though my pate was lovely the bread tasted stale. But maybe next time might be different. But the staff I can not fault the attention to detail. Our server Jason I must say was amazing, he was charming, funny and very helpful. Made us feel so welcome, from helping us choosing our meals and explaining how long it might take, and when he made a mistake and said our mains was ready he was honest. And helped us move tables for more space. So smiley and happy, I wish most people Iv ever been served by could be like him. But generally good experience, was nice to be in a friendly and helpful environment.”

“What an incredible find! We stopped at the Flying Pig while visiting the Lake District, and it was easily one of the highlights of our trip. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed by a warm, cosy atmosphere that perfectly captures what a traditional British pub should be. It has a great balance of being lively without feeling overcrowded, making it the perfect place to relax after a day exploring. The food was absolutely outstanding. I had the steak and ale pie, which was one of the best I’ve ever had. The pastry was perfectly golden and crisp, the filling was rich, tender and packed with flavour, and it was served with silky smooth mashed potato, delicious mushy peas and a rich homemade gravy that brought everything together beautifully. Every bite was incredible. We also tried the rotisserie chicken, which was cooked to perfection – juicy, tender and full of flavour. It came with thick-cut crispy chips, a fresh salad and creamy coleslaw, all of which were excellent. The fish and chips were equally impressive, with beautifully flaky fish inside a light, crispy batter and perfectly cooked chips. The portions were very generous, and everything tasted fresh and homemade. The service deserves a special mention too. Every member of staff we spoke to was friendly, welcoming and genuinely attentive. Nothing felt rushed, and they made sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. It’s clear they take pride in both the food and the overall experience they provide. If you’re visiting Bowness or the Lake District, I can’t recommend the Flying Pig highly enough. Fantastic food, excellent service, generous portions and a brilliant atmosphere all at a fair price. We’ll definitely be returning the next time we’re in the area, and I’ll be recommending it to anyone visiting the Lakes. A well-deserved five stars!”
