Customer Review Summary
The Sunday roast draws the most mentions but divides reviewers. Some call the roast dinner delicious or really great, with a good portion of meat, while others report lukewarm plates. One describes tough roast beef, a dry and hollow Yorkshire pudding, soggy roast potatoes and watery gravy, and another says the Sunday dinner was not very warm. Close behind, the rump earns strong praise: one reviewer calls the steak tender, with chunky chips and onion rings, and another names the lamb rump the best they have had. Fish and chips, a meat pie and sticky toffee pudding also get good words, though one reviewer found the custard jug tiny. Reviewers like the outdoor seating beside the stream, the local gins and the range of ales, lagers and ciders. Service is mostly called friendly, patient and helpful. One couple, however, describe a very long wait for dinner, with no one explaining the kitchen delay until they asked, and food that looked as if it had been sitting out. One hiker says staff helped charge their phone.

“The Flying Fleece is always our pub of choice when we’re in Ambleside. We’ve visited in winter for cosy drinks, but this was the first summer visit and we loved sitting outside next to the stream, soaking up the atmosphere or Ambleside while sipping local Lakes gins. The staff were attentive and happy to recommend cocktails, and the live singer added to the relaxed atmosphere. We returned the following evening for dinner after craving steak, and it was honestly one of the best we’ve had in a long time. The rump was cooked perfectly and incredibly tender, with delicious chunky chips and great onion rings. A bottle of Malbec was the perfect accompaniment. A lovely spot in any season — friendly staff, great atmosphere and excellent food. We found ourselves gravitating back throughout our stay and will definitely return.”

“We stopped here for a drink outdoors on a sunny evening and stayed for a meal taking advantage of the "earlybird special" 2 or 3 courses for a fixed price. My wife had fish and chips 7/10, I had a meat pie with chips 9/10. I thought it good value for the money - most places locally charge more - we enjoyed our meal. Staff were friendly and helpfull and a decent selection of ales, lagers and ciders. We were satisfied.”

“They bill themselves as “A great British pub”. They *could* be, but they disappointed a lot of people this evening. While the location and atmosphere are pretty good, including lots of outdoor seating, the service and food made a very bad impression on first timers like ourselves. My wife and I ordered our dinner shortly before 6:00 (just in time for the early bird pricing). We were served around 7:20, and no one came by to explain what was taking so long. I had to ask after 45 minutes, and was told by our server that there was some kind of issue in the kitchen, but again, no one ever came to our table or other tables nearby to check on us. This is unacceptable in the service industry. When the food arrived, it appeared to have been sitting out for some time before being delivered to our table. This experience was a waste of our time and money.”

“We went here as a large family group for my dad's 80th. It was brilliant. Decent menu lots of gluten free options and great service. It was just loud enough that there was a good atmosphere but not so loud that you couldn't hear anything. The team serving us was amazing, friendly helpful and polite.”

“I had the lamb rump, side salad and Irish whiskey. It’s the best lamb rump I’ve ever had. People are very friendly and helpful, they helped me to charge my phone. Best reward people can get after a long hiking.”
