Quick info
About The Royal Oak
The Royal Oak is a pub in Winchester, reached by walking in through the Royal Passage. Signs claim it is one of England's oldest pubs and note a historical link to Queen Emma of Normandy, which gives visitors some local history to read about before they order. Downstairs, a cellar area with old foundations is reached by very steep stairs. The menu covers pub dishes, including the Vintage Cheddar & Bacon Burger, steak and ale pie and fish and chips, with vegetarian options and alcohol-free drinks alongside. Guests sit anywhere they like and order at the bar. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often point to the age and history of the building, described as one of the oldest pubs in the country and tied to Queen Emma of Normandy, with signs explaining its past and a downstairs cellar area beside the old foundations where several chose to sit. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and attentive, welcoming walk-ins and checking on tables several times. Food comes close behind: a vintage cheddar and bacon burger, Chicken Kiev, duck hash, steak and ale pie, and fish and chips, with mash, peas and gravy singled out as a strong combination. A vegetarian was pleasantly surprised by the options and the alcohol free drinks. Reviewers also praise the beer selection, the cider and a berries ale, and a patio that suited a smoker. The one complaint is a kitchen issue on the day that left a group with only drinks instead of the meal they had planned. One reviewer notes that servers carried drinks and coffees down the very steep stairs to the downstairs tables.

“The pub was very quiet, but we loved it, sat downstairs next to the old foundations. The staff were so attentive, professional and friendly, particularly Becky. They made the effort to take the drinks and coffees down the very steep stairs. Superb service!!”

“As a solo Canadian traveler - this pub was hands down my favorite pub that I visited in Winchester! The service was excellent! The food was good and the 2 for 1 pints of beer was an added bonus! I loved the incredible history of this building and was grateful that the staff allowed me to take pics around the bar. I especially loved the walk through the Royal Passage to the pub itself. It was like walking through time. Also, as a smoker, I really appreciated the outside patio. I visited this pub more than once during my stay in Winchester.”

“1000 years old pub serving nice drinks and food. Being a vegetarian I didn’t expect a lot of options but was pleasantly surprised to see quite good ones. I could also get alcohol free drinks. The vibe of the place is quite different. Definitely a must go if you are visiting winchester.”
