Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often call The Chestnut Horse a lovely country pub, praising its setting and friendly staff, and a family gathering and a pre-wedding meetup in the pub's private areas both went well. The food divides opinion. One diner found the Sunday roast pork with Yorkshire pudding on point, while a large party found the same dish greasy, swimming in unrendered fat, and without the crackling they had pre-ordered. The pulled lamb scotch egg, the gammon and a ploughmans draw praise, but the haddock in the fish and chips was called tasteless, and the schnitzel, pie and stroganoff were described as salty, dry or half-cold. Service splits too. Some found staff attentive and polite, while others felt invisible at the bar or were never checked on after the food arrived, even on the unlimited chips night. Two reviewers dislike the service charge added to the bill. One diner who raised the cold, salty dishes with the manager received an apology and a bill with the service charge removed.

“A lovely pub. Great staff who were so helpful when my son hired out an area of the pub for a group to meet up prior to his wedding the next day. We will definitely be going back to eat and soak up the atmosphere”

“What a fantastic find! Massive room (room 4), comfy bed, clean bathroom. Staff were welcoming, friendly and generally laid back. Special thanks to Evie and Jack for looking after us. Food was delicious, both dinner and breakfast. Locally sourced produce and the smell of Hampshire Wick products throughout was lush. Great find for a 1 night stopover.”

“What a lovely country pub! The food was excellent, and the staff were really friendly. Well worth the trip. The portions are big and are good value for what you actually get. If anyone is staying in Winchester or on the outskirts precruise from Southampton it's a must visit. You won't be disappointed...We will definitely return on our next cruise! From the Lewis Family”

“Went to the Chestnut Horse for sunday lunch with partner and friend, the roast pork, yorkshire pudding, veg and gravy was on point. Staff were attentive and polite. Lovely older pub with nicely renovated dining area overlooking the kitchen. Nice outdoor dining area with umbrellas.”

“Was a lovely setting but parking would of been a nightmare as we had last place in small car park. Service was ok to begin but once we got our food never saw any one else till they took our plates. We went for the tuesday steak night unlimited chips but no one asked us if our meal was ok or if we wanted any more chips. Also there is a big service charge added to the bill. Not sure if we would return bit out of the way as well 🤔”
