Quick info
About The Wayfarer
The Wayfarer is a family-run country pub and restaurant at 1-3 Alder Ln in Wigan, with a microbrewery on site that brews its own ale. The Problem Child beers are made locally, and Paulaner Lager is also on tap. A real wood fire is lit in the pub. The kitchen offers two and three course specials and a garlic and cheese flat bread, along with vegan options that include a nut roast. A festive menu with a turkey roast is served at Christmas. A private dining room gives groups a space of their own, and a section in the corner is set aside for dogs.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the food, with the garlic and cheese flat bread, the turkey roast, nut roast and Christmas pudding singled out, and several return for the festive menu. Close behind come the staff, described as friendly and attentive, with one reviewer given their own allergy menu and another noting a high chair for a baby and water and treats for a dog. The own-brewed ale gets mentions too, including a refreshing half of pale and a local beer on the bar, along with a cosy wood fire and a garden area. The two and three course set price is called good value by a few. A large family said every dish arrived hot and together. The caveat is uneven: one breakfast reviewer left the food uneaten, describing a dry, hard black pudding, undercooked bacon and untoasted bread, while another found the online festive set menu did not match the individually priced dishes on arrival. One reviewer called the pub busy and clearly popular, and the dog-friendly corner was checked on throughout the meal.

“I have an unusual allergy which isn’t commonly understood and often leads to a lot of nervousness when dining out however, yesterday evening was a very welcome change. I booked a table very last minute but even within that time, I had my own menu with the dishes I could and couldn’t eat identified. The effort made made my evening worry free and for the first time in a long time I was able to eat my meal worry free too. And the food was incredible of course! All the staff from walking into the Wayfarer to leaving were incredibly kind, funny and helpful. I can’t wait to be back and thank you again.”

“Went for breakfast Saturday morning, coffee and hot chocolate were ok and the server was nice and friendly. What wasn’t nice was the food. Ended up paying for the coffee and leaving the inedible food. I would name the worst item but it was all awful. Black pudding was dry and hard best described as a hockey puck, bacon was like a grey undercooked belly pork, hash brown ? It looked like a round arancini ball with what can only be described as rice/potato mush and don’t get me onto the taste. Even with poached egg on toast the bread wasn't even toasted or buttered. We ended up paying for the coffee and leaving. Honestly the worst breakfast we’ve ever had.”

“Attended for a work meeting, and was very enjoyable especially the value for money with the 2 and 3 course specials, the garlic and cheese flat bread is something else, the staff are very pleasant and efficient”

“Lovely pub serving food and brewing their own ale. I tried half a pale which was very refreshing. Really nice garden area.”
