About Juniper Restaurant

Juniper Restaurant is a small restaurant at 7 Church Ln in Wigan, with tables on an upstairs and a downstairs level. The kitchen runs a seasonal menu built on locally sourced produce, and a specials board adds several seafood and fish options, with mussels among the mains. The Sunday roast centres on roast beef served with Yorkshire pudding, gravy and horseradish, alongside roast potatoes, carrot and swede, and parsnip. Pavlova is one of the desserts, and a vegan menu runs alongside the main one. Exclusive theme night events bring tasting menu specials, giving guests a different way to eat here from the regular menu. The bar covers cocktails, wines, spirits and beers. The restaurant also hosts celebrations such as graduations, birthdays and anniversaries.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return to the Sunday roast, with the roast beef praised as tender and well presented, and the gravy called rich, with an extra jug and a separate side plate for vegetables noted as nice touches. Close behind are the starters and desserts, including the black pudding and crispy pork belly, mackerel pate, the cornetto tiramisu and a mango and passionfruit pavlova. Seafood specials draw praise too, with mussels described as some of the best one diner has had, and cod also mentioned. Service is repeatedly called friendly and attentive, and several describe the value as reasonable for the quality. The caveat sits mostly with the roast. One diner found the vegetables sparse, the horseradish overpowering the carrots and swede, the cabbage with bacon lacking flavour and the roast potatoes underwhelming, while another wanted crispier potatoes. One reviewer also noted the early closing time. Several end on a dessert plate or a affogato with a brandy on the side.

“A little gem – absolutely loved it! We booked Juniper after seeing it recommended on TripAdvisor, so it was a bit of an experiment. Well, we certainly weren't disappointed! First impressions were lovely. From the outside, the restaurant has a super cute façade, with a little table and chairs tucked beside a pretty blue door. As we stepped inside, there was a great soundtrack playing softly in the background, and we were warmly welcomed by a friendly server. Such a lovely atmosphere from the very start. We ordered from what appeared to be a seasonal menu, which I absolutely LOVE! For starters, we chose the black pudding and crispy pork belly, followed by cod for me and the roast pork chop for my partner. Everything was absolutely delicious. Beautifully presented, served piping hot and cooked to perfection. We didn't even take many photos because we just dived straight in! The service throughout was fantastic too – friendly, attentive and relaxed. And of course, we had to have dessert. Everything had been so good that it seemed a shame to miss out! I went for the affogato with a brandy on the side, while my partner had the cornetto tiramisu. Both were wonderful and a perfect end to the meal. Add in a couple of lovely large glasses of quality wine, and it really was a fabulous evening. Not a single complaint from either of us. Gorgeous food, excellent service, a lovely atmosphere and a restaurant with real charm. We absolutely LOVED it and wouldn't hesitate to return. Highly recommended!”

“Such a gorgeous hidden gem. We wanted to go somewhere nice for our anniversary and we usually go to Manchester. We wanted to try somewhere a bit local that was still very nice. It definitely lived up to our expectations. It was very cozy. The food was great and the staff were very nice unfriendly I would definitely go again. I had such a lovely time and even better that it’s just 10 minutes away from my home. If you Have been thinking about trying Juniper, go! 🩷🩷”

“After a few weeks in the US, I was seriously craving a proper Sunday roast. Thankfully, Juniper Restaurant came to the rescue. This cute little place offers a varied Sunday menu with a slightly more refined take on the classic roast. Having spent the US trip expanding my stomach, I was trying to be sensible and only went for the one-course option at £18, which is great value! Good job too, as I was absolutely stuffed by the end. I opted for the Roast Welsh Wagyu Beef served with roast potatoes, maple parsnip, vichy carrot, creamed leeks, garlic potatoes, horseradish carrot & swede, Yorkshire pudding and pan gravy. The beef was perfectly tender and packed with flavour, while the gravy was rich and delicious. Always a good sign when you’re immediately planning where to pour your next helping. A nice touch was the separate side plate for the vegetables, along with an extra jug of gravy. As any roast enthusiast knows, gravy is a serious subject and extra gravy brings peace of mind. The Yorkshire pudding was spot on. I’d personally have liked my roasties a little crispier, but that’s a minor point in what was a very enjoyable roast. Service was excellent throughout and the restaurant has a cute, classy feel. It was quiet, making it a great choice if you’re after a peaceful Sunday lunch. Verdict: A quality Sunday roast in a lovely setting with great food. Well worth a visit if you’re looking for something a little more refined than your standard pub roast. 🍽️ Paying customer | Honest review”

“I was looking for a last minute meal for my Birthday and I fancied some seafood. I found this place and after reading encouraging reviews I booked. We were certainly not disappointed. The selection of fish on the specials was excellent and the main menu just as good. The place was clean and the the atmosphere was calming. It was midweek and I didn't expect it to be buzzing. I ordered the Mackerel Pate for Starters and my wife had the Prawn Cocktail. We also ordered a bottle of wine with the meal. For mains, I had the Mussels and my Wife had the Lamb. Both starters and mains were excellent and the Mussels were certainly some of the best I've ever had. Service was excellent, attentive and professional. The venue was clean and inviting. We only live down the road in Winstanley, so to find this on our doorstep we were very pleased. The only slight negative I noticed was the early closing time, but that didn't cause us any problems at all as we booked for 19:30. This is without a doubt the best food we have had locally and also represented good value for money for the quality that was served. We certainly will be back for more.”
