About The Stable Door Cafe & Ice Cream Parlour

Set inside Thompson House Equestrian Centre, The Stable Door Cafe & Ice Cream Parlour is a cafe in Wigan that sits alongside an on-site riding school, part of a group of businesses supporting people with a range of difficulties and offering RDA lessons as well as private and group sessions. Breakfast anchors the menu, with breakfast barms, a cooked breakfast served with beans in a small pot and eggs Benedict, and coffee, cakes and snacks run alongside. Staff take orders at the table and payment is settled at the end. Booking ahead is advised. The cafe opens Tuesday to Sunday during the daytime and closes on Mondays. A step-free entrance keeps the room reachable for visitors with mobility needs, high chairs suit families with young children, and dogs are welcome, with tables outside for anyone who prefers to eat in the open air. Buffets and afternoon tea can be arranged for gatherings, and the venue also runs events such as a breakfast with the Easter bunny.

Customer Review Summary

Breakfast anchors most visits: one diner calls the Ferrier's Breakfast perfectly cooked and very tasty, ample for two though on the expensive side, while another who came for a breakfast with the Easter bunny found it good value and the welcome friendly. Close behind, a buffet ordered for a family gathering drew praise for its generous portions and presentation, with the sausage rolls and lemon drizzle cake picked out, and individual reviewers name the eggs Benedict and an afternoon tea, both recommended. Others come for the coffee, cakes and ice cream, the space inside and out, and the site's charity and riding school connection. Staff attitude is the recurring complaint: several describe a miserable or unwelcoming greeting, one an order forgotten and then disputed with no apology, and another a family refused service at lunchtime during a staff break. One reviewer reports a mouldy pepper grinder, and another a disputed overcharge that was corrected, again without an apology. A counterpoint from one visit: a free bowl of water brought for a dog.

“Lovely cafe! I went in yesterday and had the eggs Benedict. The service was amazing, there was a young brunette girl working who was very kind, attentive, and quick at her job. Would definitely come back!”

“A new find for us. We chose it because it was mid point for both of us, easy parking, plenty of space inside and out, selection of coffees cakes ice cream and other snacks. Nice staff. Part of a group of businesses supporting quality of life for people with a range of difficulties, including a riding school who offer RDA, private lessons and group lessons.”

“Poor experience. Staff forgot our order, no apologises even questioned who took our order, when told her it was her, she said she didn't remember. Not rushing back. Poor service. Even waiting to wipe the table before we had stood up.”

“Went today for breakfast with Easter bunny good breakfast staff very welcoming and friendly good value for money even though grandson wary of giant bunny lol 😂”

“Arrived at 9.30. Abruptly met by a blond haired older lady whether we had booked (one person in cafe at this point). She then proceeded to ask how many of us there was. We are a family of 5 including my Autistic son. Which is important to note here. Rudely pointed us to a table. We ordered. Ate. And on leaving there were further guests who had arrived without the same question or unwelcome attitude. On paying. It was clear it was incorrect. On asking for it to be read out I was clearly being overcharged. This was seen to be rectified. Without an apology however. We still believe an overcharge occurred. 5 breakfast barms approx £4-5 each, toast. 5 drinks. £43. Have been many, many times before but based on today would not return.”
