Quick info
About Black Horse Pembury
A heated terrace with a retractable electronic roof gives Black Horse Pembury an outdoor space that stays usable when the roof is closed and opens up when it isn't. The gastropub sits on High St in Tunbridge Wells, behind a narrow frontage that runs a long way back into a traditional pub interior with exposed beams and a real fire. The kitchen leans on fish and seafood across a menu of around ten dishes, including a Fisherman's Pie, Crab, Prawn And Spinach Thermidor and Beef Wellington, with portions on the generous side. A Sunday carvery runs alongside the roast, replenished through the day, and a separate pub menu of several pages covers weekday evenings. Dogs are welcome, and the doors open daily. Anyone who cannot finish dessert can take the rest away.

Customer Review Summary
The Sunday carvery is what draws reviewers back most, described by repeat visitors as one of the best around and holding its quality whatever time of day they arrive. One diner rates the roast on a par with their own cooking and singles out lamb that was tender and flavourful, while another notes that anyone too full for pudding can take it away. Close behind come the portions, with one guest reporting battered fish hanging off the edge of the plate. Several describe warm, attentive staff, including a group squeezed in last minute, though one regular who calls the food faultless says service can vary, ranging from the best they've had to very poor. The outdoor space, with its retractable roof, and the real fire indoors both draw praise, and one visitor mentions an occasional icy blast from the automatic door to the terrace. Several suggest booking ahead, noting how popular it gets, and one mentions the pub decorated for Christmas.

“It is a great venue. The outside space has an electronic roof the pub opened up so we could sit in the sun. The menu is 4 pages, great choice and caters for, I’m pretty sure, anyone. Service is very good even when busy. Helpful staff and very patient and professional. The food was pretty good. All in all would visit again for the outdoor space and service.”

“Absolutely brilliant. Came here for a carvery after spending a few days in nearby and looking for a Sunday roast. The staff managed to squeeze us in last minute, were warm and welcoming, and the food beyond expectations. 10/10 will come back when I'm next in the area.”
