About Ollie's

Ollie's is a restaurant at 34-36 Torwood Street in Torquay, opened in November 2020 after a complete refurbishment. The kitchen sources its produce from suppliers across Devon. Steak anchors the menu, with flat iron and chateaubriand for two served with sides and sauces, and the chefs present each steak to the table before cooking it. Pork belly appears as a starter. A cocktail bar adjoins the restaurant for drinks before dinner, and the Cloudy Apple is one of its named cocktails. A set menu pairs a starter with a main course, and a three-course set menu is also offered. Reservations are required, and tables can be booked online.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often single out the Chateaubriand, praised as cooked exactly as requested, tender and full of flavour, with the flat iron steak and a lobster dish also described as delicious. Close behind are the cocktails, with reviewers mentioning The Cloudy Apple and enjoying a pre-dinner drink in the adjacent bar. Also praised are the generous portions, the jaffa cake sundae and the set menus described as good value. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and helpful, and one reviewer liked that the chefs presented the steaks before cooking. The main complaint is slow service. One party waited over an hour for their food during a busy night with a large group, and another felt forgotten at first until one of the staff turned things around. One reviewer also found the turkey pie upgrade tasty but not worth the extra. Several mention small gestures to mark occasions, including a free birthday plate and a drink on the house after the delay.

“Had lobster here. Was absolutely delicious, one of the best meals I've ever eaten. The chips and salad were brilliant too. Amazing service and atmosphere and great to have a cocktail in the 'bit on the side ' next door. Thoroughly recommended.”

“Great food, but service was slower than expected We visited Ollie’s after it was recommended by a member of staff at our hotel as a good place for steak, and overall we had a really enjoyable meal. The location was convenient for us and not far from our hotel. The food itself was excellent. We had the Chateaubriand with two sauces, Asian cabbage, green vegetables, pork belly and fries. The steak was cooked perfectly and everything was really tasty. The main downside was the service. There was a large stag group in the restaurant which seemed to take up a lot of the server’s attention, and unfortunately we waited over an hour for our food. The staff were very apologetic and kindly offered us a drink on the house to make up for the delay, which we appreciated. The only issue was that by the time the food arrived, my partner had gone well past the point of being hungry and had actually lost his appetite\! We ended up taking some of the food away with us. The staff themselves were lovely…friendly, professional and very presentable, so it didn’t feel like a lack of effort from them. It seemed more like the restaurant was struggling to keep up with the particularly large group that evening. There’s also a cocktail bar attached to the restaurant, which was a nice addition. We had a drink before the meal as we arrived early. Their house champagne at £14 a glass, was very reasonable and was thoroughly enjoyed. As it was my birthday, they also brought out a little birthday plate free of charge, which was a really sweet touch and appreciated. So, while the service was much slower than we’d have liked, the food was excellent, the staff were friendly and the little touches made it a good evening overall. We’d happily return, hopefully on a quieter night!”

“The food was absolutely delicious. Service was a little slow at first as we seemed to have been forgotten, but one of the ladies quickly turned things around and took great care of us. We really enjoyed our meal and would definitely come back.”

“Absolutely fantastic experience at Ollie’s! The food was amazing everything was full of flavour, and beautifully presented. The cocktails were some of the best I’ve ever tried. I’ll definitely be coming back and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for excellent food and drinks!”

“Decided to book for our 20th wedding anniversary, Ollie’s is one of those places we kept meaning to try but had never gotten around to - I wish we had gone sooner! It was easy enough to reserve the table online & upon arrival we had cocktails in the adjacent bar which were really refreshing. The restaurant itself is quite pleasant and the staff are all so super friendly and efficient. We decided to go for the starter & main course for £30 & a bottle of Malbec. When looking at the normal menu prices the £30 is outstanding value. We had scallops & belly pork to start with the flat iron steak for mains. Portion sizes were perfect and the starters were delicious, the steak though, WOW. I imagined it was going to be just a small piece but no ! A generous sized steak that had to be one of the most flavoursome, tender steaks I’ve ever had (and I’ve had a few over the years!). Our special meal was topped by a lovely gesture from the restaurant which really made us smile. If you’re looking for a decent well priced meal then you can’t go wrong especially on their Wednesday special - their steak night also caught my eye so will be returning to try that out soon. For everyone in Ollie’s, thank you for making our evening really memorable - it meant a lot 🙌”
