About The Calley Arms
On Broome Manor Ln in Swindon, The Calley Arms is a Wiltshire pub that pours local real ales and serves pub food. Dogs are welcome, and the team provides water bowls, treats and blankets for them. The kitchen cooks with locally sourced Burderop Farm beef and Hodson Honey. The Sunday roast comes with large portions and plenty of fresh vegetables, and a beetroot wellington gives vegetarians a main course of their own. Lamb shank and a cheese and bacon burger sit elsewhere on the menu. Families can use a kids area stocked with toys and books. Rhubarb crumble with ice cream is among the desserts.

Customer Review Summary
Most reviewers come for the Sunday roast, praised for huge portions and plenty of fresh veg, with a belly pork that melted in the mouth and good veggie options for one diner's partner. Close behind are the lamb shank with creamy mash and minted gravy, a cheese and bacon burger with beer batter onion rings, and a generous rhubarb crumble. Diners describe friendly staff, a cosy room with a fireplace, and a welcome for dogs, including blankets and water. Families mention toys, books and a kids area. The most detailed complaint comes from one party whose three vegetarian roasts did not match: one beetroot wellington arrived with a different pastry, and the waitress could not say why. The same reviewer describes plates left on the table, slow desserts, stretched front-of-house staff, a tense kitchen and no reply to an email. Another reports no draught or keg beers on two visits, and one calls it very much a locals pub. Several visitors also mention the resident tortoise.

“we went in a couple of times and both times there was no draught or keg beers..not a good sign for the future of the pub..”

“Second time at this lovely country pub and again the roast dinner was superb. Loads of veg and it’s all fresh, not frozen with plenty to choose from. The belly pork we had tasted great and just melted in your mouth. Staff are friendly and efficient and nothing was too much trouble. It’s not expensive ! I’d sooner pay a couple of pounds more and get quality food and good service than go to some of the other inferior pubs in and around Swindon and come away disappointed !”

“I share this review disappointed that after over a week later I have not heard a reply via email and they have not responded to what could have been extremely serious. Firstly I’d like to say the staff who greeted us as the door were lovely and very initially attentive, they got tap water for the whole party before we’d even sat down which was great and quickly took our food and drinks order. They also got blankets and water for the dogs which was brilliant. Nearly all of us had the roast and it was excellent, we really enjoyed it but sadly things went somewhat downhill from there. 3 of us ordered a vegetarian roast which was down as a Beetroot wellington. When served 2 of us got the beetroot and one of us received something very different. The look of the pastry top was very different and it was very clearly a completely different dish, there was no beetroot in the pastry but it did have mushrooms and more concerningly, nuts, which appeared to be pine nuts. I asked the waitress about this and she went to go and speak to the kitchen, on her return we were told it was indeed the same dish as the others, just the pastry was different but the waitress wasn’t sure. This was very clearly not the case, and I don’t feel it was the appropriate action to not investigate this further from the kitchen. We were not asked about any allergens when we sat down so there would have been no way to know if the guest who ate this meal was allergic and I personally think this could have been quite serious. Separately after we’d finished our dinner, 2 of our plates were cleared but it was not until over an hour later the rest were removed and this was after we’d asked if we could order dessert, we’d looked at the menu sat on the bar as we were never given a menu to look and and a further 30 minutes later the desserts were served, one of which was not given to us. One of the desserts was not served 15 minutes after the main ones had come out so we asked to have this removed and not served, which was done. We were there for almost 3 hours for what should have been a maximum of a 2 hour dinner and dessert The staff were clearly working hard but unable to cope with the number of customers at the bar as well as dining tables and I couldn’t see anyone who seemed to be a senior member of staff working out the front which made things messy and disorganised and I could see other tables were also not getting their correct orders. The kitchen staff seemed quite angry with the girls out front and this seemed quite challenging for them to deal with I would be happy to change my review after hearing back but to have no response is extremely disappointing.”

“We had a really lovely family roast at the Calley Arms. We were looking for lunch after the Swindon half marathon. We booked into the Calley Arms for Sunday lunch. It's a lovely pub, really bright and friendly. There's an excellent kids area. The roast was fantastic, really tasty with good portions. Thanks!”
