About The Silver Plough
The Silver Plough is a pub on White Hill in Salisbury, set in an 18th-century building with a skittle alley, original oak beams and open fires. The menu runs to 56 dishes, including a roast dinner with a veggie roast alongside the meat one, handmade pies such as the venison pie, and sticky toffee pudding, which is cooked fresh and takes slightly longer to arrive. Beer comes from Rude Giant, a Wiltshire brewery, and the cocktail list includes the Negroni. Gluten-free options are available. A private dining room suits groups, and dogs are welcome inside. Online booking reserves a 2 hour timeslot, and walk-ins are also seated.

Customer Review Summary
Roast dinners lead the praise, with one reviewer calling the roast pork brilliant and a vegetarian saying the veggie roast tasted like home-cooked food. Close behind are the pork belly bites and the handmade pies, venison and chicken and gammon. Others single out a wild mushroom risotto, mackerel pate, beer-battered haddock, Brixham sea bass and Welsh rarebit. Reviewers describe generous portions, with the option to make them smaller, and a gluten free diner found plenty of choices. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, and the atmosphere is described as calm, with well behaved kids playing and dogs waiting for snacks to drop. Beer drinkers mention a good range, including a Rude Giant ale from a Wiltshire brewery. The caveats are small. One grandparent found the children's menu limited to a burger or fish and chips, and another reviewer noted the fresh-cooked puddings took slightly longer to arrive. One diner's waitress even let them add stracciatella ice cream to a sticky toffee pudding.

“This has to be the best place in Salisbury to have a roast dinner! I had the veggie roast and my partner had the meat one. I don’t usually enjoy eating out as a vegetarian because the roast options are often disappointing, but this was just like home-cooked food. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals, and the service was outstanding. The staff were really lovely too. We’ll definitely be back!”

“Delighted staff and delicious food. We chose mackerel pate which was very tasty and a generous portion. Pudding and a glass of Sauvignon blanc to follow! I am Gluten Free and there were plenty of options and ways of making most choices work for me. I can highly recommend The Silver plough.”

“I really enjoyed my first time here, it was wonderful. The roast pork was brilliant, cannot fault it whatsoever. The chicken was cooked perfectly too. Great location, quiet area. The pub/restaurant itself looks great inside and out. It’s wheelchair accessible and has plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors. When booking our table online, it reserves a 2 hour timeslot which is understandable for customers looking to have starters, mains and dessert. Our order was taken quickly and the food came out after roughly 30 minutes, not long to wait in comparison to other restaurants. Regrettably we didn’t stay for dessert as we were full up from the mains but I will come back to try more of the delicious food in the future. The portion sizes are healthy with the option to make it smaller, not a common offer from many pubs or restaurants. I would recommend coming here; it’s an authentic local pub that serves amazing food and has a calming atmosphere. It really is a hidden gem. Thank you to our server, Sophie, for being efficient, friendly and catering to us. We really enjoyed coming here today.”

“5 stars 🌟 Beautiful old candlelight pub, with original oak beams and roaring fires. Also, a lovely fairy lit garden outside in the summer months. Food 10/10! We had the pork belly bites and handmade venison pie, which was delicious. The rest of the menu also looked amazing. The wait staff, especially David our server was very attentive, friendly and looked after us superbly. Including our pooch. Highly recommend.”
