Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the food, with scampi, burgers, curry, pasta and gammon all described as fresh, hot and well prepared, and several call it delicious with generous portions and plenty of choice. Close behind is the welcome from staff, with reviewers calling the bar team friendly, attentive and quick, including through the ordering app. The canalside garden and a small outdoor play area for children also draw mentions, and one pair of kayakers stopped for a drink and returned for dinner. The criticism is sharper in the lower ratings. One reviewer describes a Sunday lunch that was lukewarm, with tough beef, overcooked veg and a plate swimming in gravy, plus a sirloin with dry, stuck-together chips. Another found a hunters chicken breast very small and the chips overcooked. A third reports a steak that was mostly fat and cooked unevenly, along with dismissive treatment at the bar. A manager offered a replacement meal, but the reviewer wanted a refund or part refund instead.

“Stopped in for a drink as we passed by kayaking on the canal. Liked it so much we went back once we finished for dinner. Food was great and the staff were brilliant. Clearly a busy evening for them but they coped fantastically under the pressure. Will definitely return next time we're paddling that way.”

“We had a fantastic visit to the Ash Tree in Rugeley. The food was delicious, with generous portions and plenty of choice on the menu. The staff were welcoming, friendly, and attentive, making us feel well looked after from the moment we arrived. The pub has a lovely atmosphere, is clean and comfortable, and the canalside setting makes it an even more enjoyable place to relax. Whether you’re popping in for a family meal, drinks with friends, or a Sunday lunch, I’d definitely recommend the Ash Tree. We’ll certainly be back!”

“Absolutely brilliant experience! The food was delicious, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the service was outstanding. A special mention has to go to Lydia, who looked after us all evening. She was so friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcome. Nothing was too much trouble, and her positive attitude really made our visit even better. Excellent customer service like that makes all the difference. We’ll definitely be back and would highly recommend this pub!”

“The pub wasnt too busy when we visited but the atmosphere was warm and welcoming with a very homely feeling. We were greeted by the very friendly Lilly on arrival who showed us to our table and was incredibly nice in our interaction which continued throughout our time there. Macy who was working the bar who was very busy preparing app orders was extremely pleasant and super quick at taking and preparing orders at the bar and through the app. When finished our meals, which although simple in appearance were incredibly tasty, we went to sit outside in the spacious and comfortable garden area next to canal ordered drinks through the app which was an easy process and they were delivered promptly with a smile. Overall a great experience, one which my family and I shall definitely be trying again 😁”

“Very disappointing meal. I had hunters chicken which should be renamed hunters sparrow as the size of the breast was very small. The salad was a token gesture and the chips were cooked to within an inch of their lives. My wife had a very dry jacket potato and my friend had a tuna melt baguette which looked very unappealing along with fries that had been cooked for so long there was no potato left inside. Terrible food and terrible prices. I will not be returning and will warn of my friends as well”
