About The Barley - Bar & Restaurant
The Barley - Bar & Restaurant is a pub in Rotherham on Smithy Wood Road, just off junction 35 of the M1, and it previously traded as The Travellers Inn. The kitchen now centres on the grill, with a wide selection of grilled meat that includes a pork rack of ribs. Turkish platters and kebabs run alongside it, among them an Adana Turkish kebab served with cous cous. For a more traditional plate, the menu offers a meat and potato pie with chips or mash and mushy peas. The bar pours craft and cask ales, cocktails and a choice of wines. The pub also hosts events, including a yearly firework event.

Customer Review Summary
The meat and potato pie is the dish named most often, praised for fantastic pastry and a filling that is mostly meat, though one diner found it only warm, with lukewarm mushy peas. Close behind are the brisket burger, the salmon and prawn skewers, and pork ribs that fell off the bone. Reviewers also single out the Adana Turkish kebab with fluffy couscous, lamb chops, calamari, seafood paella and a mushroom taco. Homemade chips, generous portions and friendly staff come up repeatedly, and several were seated straight away. One diner was told the Turkish platter was out of stock because of its popularity. The main complaint comes from a birthday booking for six, where the food arrived very late after ordering, with young children waiting. That Turkish platter came half cold and half warm, and one Moroccan lamb dish arrived with what looked like microwave rice instead of couscous. The reviewer felt the waitress was overworked and close to tears, and the staff discounted the bill.

“Here for the weekend in our motorhome. Great place. Friendly staff and on the ball with everything. Food was absolutely gorgeous. Cannot fault it. Great use of toilets as they are kept open 24/7 which is a massive bonus. Being able to park up here for free is amazing. If I had a critism it would be to say this......a shower being added to the outdoor toilets would be a huge bonus. Also the surroundings areas are heavily littered and look scruffy. Would absolutely lift the 1st I impression you get upon arrival. I get that the area surroundings arent the pubs liability but it would make a huge difference and maybe people wouldn't litter. Just little things that can make a place a tiny bit better helps. Otherwise......im very impressed. Joanne, huge thanks for hosting us.”

“Very very disappointed. Went for a birthday meal. Booked a table for 6 people at 6pm drinks order taken promptly and delivered. However after ordering our food not much after 6pm it was nearly 1945 before we got our food. We had two young children in our party so they had to wait this long for food. When the food came it was very poor quality and not very well cooked. To be specific I ordered a Turkish platter half of it was cold the other half warm. The Moroccan lamb which was supposed to come with cous cous one came with this the other came with what appeared to be microwave rice. The waitress that served us after I complained twice about the wait at the bar, was nearly in tears when she gave us our food and could not apologise enough. We felt so sorry for her as she was clearly massively overworked and under pressure. When i went to pay our bill the staff member did discount our bill and acknowledged the service we had was not right. Not a great experience at all, but i feel The management have really put on the staff and it showed. We were not the only group to complain about the long wait. Not going to rush to come back here at all. Disappointing.”

“Really great menu, dined in a 4. Had starters which were amazing, I had the mushroom taco which I recommend. Followed by the salmon and prawn skewers. Really nice, prawns were heads on which I'm not keen on but that's my preference and no criticism of the dish which was delicious. Others had the brisket, lamb chops and burger which all were good.”

“Menu full of options and the food is absolutely devine. Ive never seen my son in law scrape a plate before and i suspect he would have licked it clean if it wasnt so busy. Best to book but we walked in on a Sunday at 1pm and got seated straight away even with 2 other private events occuring. But it soon filled up. Large car park but it is tight and i would recommend reversing into a parking bay. Keep a look out for events evenings too.”

“Welcome to The Barley! Formerly known as The Travellers Inn just off of junction 35 on the M1. The Barley will be known for its remarkably British locally sourced food menu. Focusing around being known for our wide selection of grilled meat. With a wide range of craft & cask ales, cocktails and a great choice of wines!”
