About George & Dragon

George & Dragon is a traditional pub at 85 Main St in Rotherham, with an old-fashioned feel and dogs welcome. An upstairs room caters for large groups and birthday parties, giving bigger parties a dedicated space of their own. The kitchen serves steak and ale pie and fish and chips, and a specials board runs alongside the main menu. Sunday lunch comes with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and gravy. The pub gets very busy. Tables can be booked, and walk-ins without a booking have also been accommodated.

Customer Review Summary

Pies and fish and chips draw the most praise, with reviewers calling the steak and ale pie delicious and the fish and chips a large portion. Close behind is the Sunday lunch of beef, Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes with rich gravy. Others single out the chicken in soy, ginger and honey on a sizzler plate, a double cheeseburger with hand cut chips, and a surprisingly good pizza. Several describe friendly, accommodating staff who found tables for walk-ins and large groups, and one suggests booking a table. Cost is the recurring caveat. Reviewers call prices a little above average or quite steep, and one large party found the portions small and the sauce bland on a corn-fed chicken dish. A one-star review describes a dry, over baked steak and ale pie and chewy minted lamb, and the waitress's only response was that she would tell the chef. Some note slow service on busy nights. One group found extra drinks added to their tab and the stew dumplings looked shop bought.

“Very good food, friendly staff, very busy place, highly recommend booking a table. Prices are a little above average, but this is to be expected in Wentworth and it is good food. We shall be back”

“Fantastic first time visit to this pub. The atmosphere was exactly what I was hoping for from a traditional village pub. Full of atmosphere, well behaved customers and great service from all staff. It was late afternoon so the place was starting to become busy towards the evening. What originally started out as “just a drink” then fell into the category of “I’m starving, let’s eat” A good varied selection on the menu but we decided on a double cheeseburger with hand cut chips. Absolute delicious 🤤. The cost of the food wasn’t the cheapest but you pay for what you get. It’s not a takeaway or McDonald’s style burger so expect a better flavour and overall taste. All in all, great first visit and definitely not the last.”

“Went to george & dragon for some food, a party of 5, I had steak & ale pie, pie was over baked the meat was dry & over cooked I left most of it plus some wedges My daughter had minted lamb she left a large piece of lamb as it was chewy. The other couple who was with us he had steak @£28 he said it was rubbish. His wife had steak & ale pie she left some of her pie dry meat same as mine My wife had fish strips that was fine. When the waitress came to clear our table she asked if everything was OK, I instantly told her NO & why, her reply was ill let the chef know. That was that!! We will NOT be returning to eat at this establishment as the food was the worst food I have ever had. Was utter garbage.”

“We’ve celebrated birthdays here on a few occasions with a fairly large group. My son asked us to book again for his birthday. I don’t often leave reviews but the staff are so accommodating, I felt I had to. We’ve never had a bad meal but the pies and fish and chips are outstanding. It’s great value in comparison to other restaurants at the same price point in terms of quality and quantity. Thanks for having us.”

“We visited the George & Dragon in Wentworth on a Saturday tea time as a group of 10 family members to celebrate some important milestone birthdays. The pub is no stranger to our family as both my mum and my uncle were brought up in Wentworth and therefore, we thought it would be the perfect setting to get together to celebrate. Upon booking the table we paid a £10 per person deposit which was deducted from the bill. On arrival we were shown to the reserved table in a smaller part of the pub and we all took our seats. At this point of the evening the noise levels were quite loud and it felt like we had to shout to each other to be able to make ourselves heard. The waitress was nice and friendly and after allowing us to look at the menu for a short while she came to take an order. Wait time for the food was around 30 minutes which wasn’t too bad when catering for a large table of 10 people. The food itself however wasn’t the best I’ve personally ever eaten and was disappointed with the portion size. I had the corn-fed chicken which was on the bone with some mash two measly carrots and a bit of sweetcorn. The sauce also didn’t taste of much. I was expecting a hearty pub meal but was left disappointed. Other members of our party were also disappointed with the meals they got. While all the meals were nice there was nothing about them that made you go ‘wow’ or made you think you’d love to eat there again. The pub also runs a specials board and a couple of our party opted for the Slow Cooked Beef & Root Vegetable Stew and Dumplings. The dumplings certainly didn’t look to be home-made instead appear to be shop bought which was disappointing. Also, during the evening, they must have run out of dumplings as this was removed from the menu board… but they were still charging the same price?! Price wise I certainly think most of the dishes are over priced for what you get, disappointing once again springs to mind. After our mains we were left waiting ages before we had chance to ask for the dessert menu. Most choices on there are £8.00, I opted for the Sticky Toffee Pudding with ice cream and although it was edible the sauce had a sour taste to it? I certainly wouldn’t choose that again. Final word of warning should you attend this pub in a large group of people make sure to check your bill thoroughly!! Unfortunately for us we didn’t and afterwards realised some miscreant had put their drinks on our bar tab! Shocking behaviour from staff behind the bar to allow this to happen! We did have a nice evening because spending time with family is what is most important but I personally would not recommend this pub to anyone who was thinking of eating there and should you decide to give it a try make sure you check your bill before paying!”
