Customer Review Summary
Steak is the main draw, with reviewers praising the ribeye and fillet for a beautiful char outside and tender meat, and one saying it beat steaks across Devon and Cornwall. Close behind are the Greek salad, the lamb Klefticon, the chips and the chef's special onion ring bits. Single mentions include garlic mushrooms, chicken stroganoff, fish and chips with crispy fish, carbonara and the bread. Many describe decades of visits, some since childhood, and call the service warm and the atmosphere traditional, with an open kitchen and a busy, noisy room that some say adds to it. Cost draws comment: one reviewer calls it not cheap but first class, while another found the sauce, charged separately, enough for about a third of a steak, and the omelette small, and reports asking three times for the bill. One family describes staff bringing a birthday dessert with a candle and singing to their daughter without being asked.

“Fantastic traditional restaurant run by the same family for 60 years I believe. The carbonara was one of the best I’ve had. One of the only premises in the city centre that’s been there all my life! Steaks looked amazing too, next time!”

“This place is consistently good as has been in the heart of plymouth since the 1960s! My partner and I have visited this place on five occasions as of writing this review in August 2026. The place is always busy but staffed are always great and food is superb 👌.”

“Food tastes good, particularly enjoyed how the steak was cooked and the chips were pretty good. However, the sauce (which is £5 each and not included with a steak order) is enough for maybe 1/3 of a steak. The £8 omlette is also disappointly small. In hindsight I wouldnt have ordered the omlette or the sauce as the extra £13 i spent on them added little to no value. Asked 3 times and waited 30mins for them to get us the bill, they even topped up our water as we waited for it.”

“I had the most amazing fish and chips. The fish was beautiful and crispy and the portion was very generous. Well cooked would definitely recommend this place to anyone. My wife and myself will definitely be coming back here again probably won’t go anywhere else.”

“Popped in to try the 60th anniversary lunch special. Fantastic! Been visiting this restaurant since childhood when it first opened: 60years ago & never a single complaint! Can't get a better steak anywhere in Plymouth. Reliably great food & always lovely service. Thanks to Sarah and all staff at the S&O.”
