About Pentland Hills Cafe Express
Pentland Hills Cafe Express is a bistro cafe in Penicuik, set at the Floterstone information centre. Romanian BBQ meats and grilled sausages are cooked at the back of the café, which puts hot grilled food on the menu next to the usual cafe counter. The menu lists 20 dishes, including a Bacon Roll, Honey Cake and Banana Bread. Paninis and cakes sit among them, and a soup of the day and a meal of the day change with the kitchen. Dogs are welcome inside. The indoor seating area is small.

Customer Review Summary
Most reviewers stop in after a hike in the Pentland Hills, and the cakes and coffee come up most, with cakes described as delicious and one reviewer calling the coffee the best for miles around. Close behind are the soups and paninis, including a lamb and tarragon soup, a soup of the day and a meal of the day with an Italian recipe. One reviewer praised the Romanian bbq meats and grilled sausages, with generous portions and leftovers packed up, and another returns for the chai latte and iced coffee. Staff and owners are repeatedly called friendly, and the indoor seating is small, with covered benches and picnic tables outside. The criticism is sharp but comes from two reviewers. One said flat whites were mostly foamed hot milk with barely any coffee on two visits. Another bought a cheese scone after asking if it had sugar, found it sweet, and was met with an irate response before a refund and a sorry came, after the server showed the scone mix bag with sugar as the second highest ingredient.

“Workers are very kind, small indoor seating area and big covered benches outside. You can also get take away and eat at picnic tables around the park. Can get busy with all arriving hikers walking past and using the bathrooms.”

“Popped in yesterday to buy a cheese scone and coffee. I asked before buying if the cheese scone had sugar in. I was told the cheese scone had no sugar in so I bought one. I went outside, took one bite and it was an awful mix of sweetness and cheese - it tasted dreadful. I went back in and politely told the guy serving that it had sugar in. He said it didn’t as he’d watched them being made. I said politely that he could taste it himself. He took it out the bag and threw it in the bin asking me what I wanted. I asked for a refund on the scone. He got the card machine out but then stopped and said a few times abruptly and irately ‘Why should I give you a refund, why should you get a refund?’ and then said he would show me it had no sugar in. He went into a cupboard and brought out a new unopened industrial bag labelled ‘scone mix’ with the ingredient label covered by his hand. However the diet info below showed its carb % was vast. When the ingredients were then uncovered the second highest percentage was sugar. I did finally get a ‘sorry’ and a refund. Maybe I wasn’t the biggest spender but the negative attitude and rudeness given back was way over the top and unnecessary, really spoilt the visit.”

“Perfect spot for coffee and lunch after a hike. Cakes are absolutely delicious 🤤”

“This is the second time we’ve bought coffee from this café on the way to the Pentland Hills, and unfortunately, we’ve been disappointed with the quality on both occasions. At £4.50 for each flat white, we expected a proper coffee. Instead, what we were given was essentially foamed hot milk with barely any coffee at all. It felt like a complete rip-off, especially at that price. As this has now happened twice, it’s difficult to put it down to an accident or a one-off mistake. We had planned to return to the café after our walk to speak to the man who served us, but unfortunately, the café had already closed. I’ll have a chat with him next time I’m there for a hike. In the meantime, if he happens to read this, I hope he takes the feedback on board and improves the quality of the coffee and the customer service.”
