About Snax Cafe

Breakfast anchors the counter at Snax Cafe, a cafe on Buccleuch St in Edinburgh serving the full Scottish in a range of sizes, up to "the Biggest" with haggis, black and white pudding, tattie scone, sausage, bacon, toast and beans. An all day option keeps it running past the morning, and vegetarian and vegan eaters get a veggie breakfast with veggie sausages, plus a veggie burger and veggie wraps. Rolls, baguettes and ciabattas sit alongside burgers, which take a haggis patty as an add-on, and hash brown bites round out the order. Coffee is espresso based only, so americanos, cappuccinos and espressos rather than filter. Orders are taken as walk-ins with no booking, and it is usually busy, so expect a wait. High chairs suit families with young children, and outdoor seats let you eat in the open air. Plenty of customers carry bags of food out to the park around the corner.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come for the full Scottish breakfast, especially the "Biggest", which diners describe as a huge portion with haggis, black and white pudding, tattie scone, sausage, bacon, toast and beans. Close behind is the vegetarian side of the menu, where the all day veggie and veggie sausages draw praise, and several single out the crispy hash browns and hash brown bites. Prices come up repeatedly as reasonable, and the staff are described as friendly and quick, with a busy room, a lot of students and plenty of takeaway orders. The complaints focus on the meat and the cooking. One reviewer found the link sausages mealy and the black pudding bland, another called the haggis nothing special, and a third said the double cheeseburger with a haggis patty and the breakfast baguette were dry. One takeaway veggie burger was reported as undercooked and soggy, and that reviewer also described odd vibes from the staff. One reviewer wished for filter coffee instead of only americanos. Several mention walking to the nearby park afterward.

“Was in the neighborhood for one or two shops and stumbled upon this greasy spoon. Off the beaten track for tourists, but highly recommended, this place was the epitome of classic grub cafe. 90s music, unfussy menu, excellent food at an old school price. Clearly popular with students - it was pretty busy so be prepared to wait. Many were getting bags of food to go - there is a nice park around the corner if you want somewhere to eat and chill.”

“Very casual spot with indoor and outdoor seating. I got the "Biggest", which was a full Scottish breakfast, including haggis, black and white pudding, tattie scone, sausage, bacon, toast, and beans. The haggis was nothing special, but everything else was delicious. It's a huge portion for about ten pounds or so. It's nice to go for a walk through the nearby park afterward on the way home, too.”

“Classic Scottish breakfast. Much appreciated that vegetarian and vegan options are available. Fast, straight-forward and tasty!”
  • Hayley Forsythe
“Got a takeout veggie burger and hashbrown bites. Veggie burger was not cooked long enough! So soggy and literally inedible. Hasbrown bites were ok. Cheap, but honestly I would of rather waited longer for my food for it to be cooked properly. Disappointing to say the least. Also weird vibes from the staff. Felt like a bit of a hostile place to work.”

“Very cozy breakfast place, affordable and fast. All of the staff were lovely. A must visit in Edinburgh”
