About Pierre Victoire – French Restaurant & Bistrot

Pierre Victoire is a French restaurant and bistrot at 9 Little Clarendon St in Oxford, run as an independent family business since 1996. The kitchen cooks traditional French dishes from seasonal, locally sourced produce, and the service is delivered by a team the owners describe as knowledgeable. The menu starts with escargot and moves on to mains such as confit de canard and an onglet steak-frites served with chips and au poivre sauce. Lunch and dinner are both offered as fixed-price menus, with a choice of two or three courses. The room works for a table for two as well as larger gatherings. For groups, a private dining room is available.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often single out the steak, with the onglet steak-frites described as very beefy and tender, with crispy chips and a peppercorn sauce, though one reviewer found the steak only ok. Duck comes close behind, from the confit de canard to the magret de canard. Escargot, liver pâté with caramelised onions, moules marinières and soufflés are also named. Reviewers repeatedly praise the presentation, and one calls a Sunday roast of tender beef the best they have had. The criticism centres on service and consistency. One couple was seated second yet had their order taken last in a half-full room, then waited to pay while staff chatted at the counter. Another was sent to a table by the kitchen door despite empty ones elsewhere, found the server curt, and said the brown shrimp arrived neither deveined nor beheaded. Others mention an unstable table and a bottle of white wine served without ice. Still, when one main had a problem at a busy sitting, a replacement dish arrived shortly after.

“This was a fab find. The menu was perfect for most types of diners (veggie, pescatarian or meat eater), although if you only eat fast-food this will not be tbe place for you (& rightly so). We opted for the two course option and the dishes were very very good. There was a slight issue with one of our mains, but this was promptly dealt with and a new dish produced shortly after. Considering how busy the restaurant was, the professionalism & speed to rectify, this itself was impressive. Traditional good quality, freshly prepared, well cooked and well priced fare. If you can get a table, I would highly recommend.”

“I went with a small group and we all had a fantastic experience. The menu is really well put together and the food was excellent throughout. There is a great mix of French classics executed brilliantly, alongside thoughtful touches that make the dishes feel distinctive. The presentation was also superb. Everything we tried was excellent, but the two standout dishes for me were the Salade Niçoise and the Magret de Canard Façon Tropicale. Both were exceptional. Pierre Victoire is definitely one of the best restaurants in Oxford city centre and easily one I would recommend. Great food, beautiful presentation and a genuinely enjoyable experience from start to finish. I will definitely be going back.”

“I had a wonderful experience at Pierre Victoire yet again 😄. The service was lovely from start to finish — friendly, attentive, and welcoming, which made our whole evening feel special and looked after. The food was excellent too, with great quality ingredients, beautiful presentation🥰🥰, and delicious flavours in every dish. Everything felt fresh and carefully prepared. A lovely restaurant with quality food, wonderful service, and a warm atmosphere its a must visit!”

“Food lovely at lunch - good value. Table itself unstable. Moules frites and soufflés were very nice. Pate to bread ratio interesting. Steak ok.”

“Probably my worst meal in England so far, and a rather disappointing dining experience overall. The food was merely edible, nothing more. Nothing we ordered was particularly enjoyable or memorable, and the flavours simply did not impress us. We ordered two courses each, but surprisingly, neither of us could even finish our meal! Lol. It was not because the portions were exceptionally generous — we simply did not enjoy the food enough to finish everything. The service was equally disappointing. We were the second table to be seated, yet somehow ended up being the last to have our order taken. What made this even more frustrating was that the restaurant was not busy at all — it was only about half full at most! I could understand a longer wait if the restaurant was packed and the staff were overwhelmed, but that was clearly not the case. Watching other tables that arrived after us being attended to first made us feel rather overlooked. Unfortunately, the lack of attentiveness continued right until the end of our meal. We waited for at least five minutes just to settle the bill, while the staff seemed more interested in standing around the counter talking to one another than attending to customers. When a restaurant is only half full, there really should not be such unnecessary delays in taking orders or settling bills. Customer service needs to be much more attentive, with staff showing greater awareness and initiative rather than leaving customers waiting. Another strange part of the experience was the white wine. We ordered a bottle, which was placed in a wine container without any ice or anything to keep it chilled. I would have expected a proper ice bucket or at least some effort to maintain the wine at a suitable serving temperature. Having a container without ice rather defeats the purpose, doesn't it? Considering that this is a French restaurant, I was expecting a much more enjoyable dining experience, both in terms of food and service. Unfortunately, neither came close to meeting my expectations. Overall, merely edible food, very so-so service and disappointing attention to detail. From being the second table seated but the last to have our order taken, to waiting unnecessarily to settle the bill while staff were chatting at the counter, the entire experience was frustrating. We have enjoyed many meals during our trip around England, including some at very simple and casual places. Unfortunately, this was probably the worst meal we have had in England so far. Definitely will not be back.”

“Oxford's favourite truly independent, family-run bistrot, since 1996, serving traditional French dishes, cooked authentically using seasonal, locally-sourced produce. Knowledgeable but friendly service in an informal, rustic and lively setting. Ideal for a romantic candle-lit dinner for two, family Sunday lunch, to a celebration for fifty.
