About Cock O’ Budworth

The Cock O' Budworth is a pub in Northwich on Warrington Rd, housed in a Grade II listed former 17th-century coaching inn in the village of Great Budworth. Inside, the building keeps its snugs, low beams and open fires, and the entrance is cobbled. It is a Joseph Holt pub, so Holts beers are served at the bar, and it runs in partnership with the Cheshire Pub Company. The kitchen makes its pies in house, including a steak and ale pie with puff pastry, chunky chips and kale, and a cheese and onion and potato pie. A mixed grill also sits on the menu. Out the back, a playground gives families somewhere for children to play.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return to the steak and ale pie with puff pastry and chunky chips, with the homemade cheese and onion potato pie close behind. Sunday lunch also draws repeated praise, particularly the Yorkshire puddings. Others single out the hanging chicken kebab with flatbread and mint yoghurt, the mixed grill, hash browns with poached egg, and a well kept Crystal Gold ale. Staff are described as friendly and accommodating, and one couple recalls a barman who spotted an overcharge after they had paid and refunded it. Dog friendliness, a kids menu and a back garden come up often. The complaints are about service and access. One party was told "no dogs" at the door despite booking with a dog, then sat in the bar area, received a dirty glass that was swapped for another dirty one, and was initially refused a kids menu order because of its age limit. Others mention slow service on a busy bank holiday, a slippery entrance in the rain, old uncomfortable furniture, steps and restricted mobility access, and a mixed grill missing egg and peas.

“I have passed the Cock O' Budworth many times through my years. At the moment i pass at least 8 times a week. I booked a table for me and my friend. We arrived and parked in a good car park. Once it goes dark, the car park isn't well lit. We approached the front door of the pub via a large outside seating area. To enter the pub, you have walk up steps. We were greeted by Andrew. The staff were very friendly and polite and welcoming. We had two courses. Starters - Soup. The soup came with French bread cob and dish of butter. The soup was excellent,, very tasty. Marks out of 10 was 9.5. Starter - Two Hash Brown's with poached egg on top with a sauce. It's was excellent. Marks out of 10 would be 10.. Meal 1 - Meatball with pasta. My friend said it was a little spicy. Taste good and filling. Marks out of 10 would be 8. Meal 2 - Cheese and Onion and potato pie with chips and Greens ( think it was kale). The pie was AMAZING,, marks out of 10 for the pie would be 10. Marks out of 10 for the meal would be 9. I have marked 9 because the chunky chips weren't exactly to my liking. The chips were warm and nicely cooked, but just a little bit to crispy for my liking. A little lighter / not crispy for me. Found out that the pie was homemade,, the chef is amazing. Sadly i only took pictures of the main meals.”

“All the dishes we had were delicious. Skin-on fries perfect and crispy. Ordered hanging chicken kebab for my main - chicken tasty and succulent as were the veg. Nicely seasoned mint yoghurt dip, flatbread and salad. Husband had the steak and ale pie with kale and chunky chips. Generous seasoned meat filling, tasty pastry, kale and crispy chips. The Crystal Gold ale was smooth and well kept. Service was friendly and efficient. All staff very accommodating. Nice comfy seating and well maintained decor. Not very busy when we went, but it was early evening / late afternoon on a Saturday. Well worth a visit - more people need to get themselves over.”

“Large, historic Joseph Holts pub serving food and a range of Holts beers. Food looked good and the beer was cold. Lovely outside area out back and plenty of seating out front too. Fella behind the bar was friendly. Large carpark so may offer overnights if spending money in the pub. Ring ahead . Cheers.. 🍻”

“Upon our arrival, we were greeted by a woman who greeted us saying “no dogs, no dogs, no dogs”, in front of other customers, which was a little embarrassing to say the least. We explained we booked in advance and stated on the booking that we had a dog, not to mention it said on Google that the pub was very much family and dog-friendly, and there were other people in the restaurant with dogs, some of whom were situated on the seats at table level, not on the floor. Nevertheless, we were eventually directed to the bar area where we were seated away from other dining guests, despite other customers with their dogs on the seats in other parts of the restaurant, not in the bar area, but hey. We ordered our drinks, which came with a filthy glass, where I could easily scratch off the film of dirt with my fingernail. I pointed this out to the waitress who apologised, but ended up swapping it with another glass that was just as dirty. Our son asked for a milk, only to be told they don’t serve it, nor do they do straws. However, after negotiations we eventually got a glass of milk. Next was the food, and being autistic and having ADHD, my appetite is not great, so I generally order from the kids’ menu as I do anywhere we go, without issue. But there was an age restriction on this menu (for up to 12 years only). Feeling overwhelmed up to this point and now disappointed that I’d made a huge mistake in choosing to dine with my family here for Father’s Day, I was about to ask for the bill so we could leave and go elsewhere when the waiter said he would try to find a way to put the order through from the kids’ menu. The food was lovely, no problem there. Just a shame the rest of the experience wasn’t as enjoyable. This was our first visit, but unfortunately we won’t be dining here again.”

Good to know

“The Cock O’Budworth is an outstanding Grade II listed village pub in the scenic area of Great Budworth. It’s now being managed under the partnership of the Cheshire Pub Company. The former 17th century coaching inn brings a unique, independent touch to its operation as a local and destination drinking and dining spot. The pub is beautifully furnished throughout with cosy snugs, low beams, open fires and cobbled entrance. This wouldn’t be a proper country pub without a great beer garden and a dog friendly bar area.”
