About The Hammer and Pincers

The Hammer and Pincers is a country pub on Preston Ln in Newton Aycliffe, with a campsite and caravan site attached for overnight stays. The campsite has a security barrier at the entry and exit, and its pitches are grass or hard standing. In the kitchen, a specials menu runs alongside the full ordinary menu. Sunday lunch brings roast beef, pork or chicken with mash, roast potatoes, homemade Yorkshire pudding, mixed veg and gravy. A hot shot parmo is also on the menu, and Black Sheep cider is on draft. For weddings and parties, a big tent stands in the large beer garden at the rear, and a private dining room gives groups a space of their own. Dogs are welcome. Parking is limited on busy nights.

Customer Review Summary

Sunday lunch is the draw most reviewers return to, with roast beef, pork or chicken served with mash, roasties, homemade Yorkshire pudding, veg and gravy, described as tender, tasty and very reasonably priced. Close behind are the belly pork and chicken burger, a hot shot parmo, and chargrilled chicken with prawns and chorizo in a creamy garlic sauce, called unbelievably filling. Reviewers also mention a lunchtime fish deal, black sheep cider on draft, and desserts, with death by chocolate recommended by one. Staff are repeatedly called friendly but not pushy, with drinks kept topped up and tables found quickly for walk-ins. Others describe birthdays, a wedding and camping stays hosted here. The one recurring caveat is practical: one reviewer notes limited parking on a busy night, and another says the campsite looks dated and would welcome some TLC, though work on new paths and pitches has started. One reviewer, too full for pudding after the roast, still found the wait short.

“We recently styled a wedding here, the venue and staff were amazing. Very friendly. Low Fell Hire 5ft wooden light up letters looked great here and did suit the rustic vibe”

“What a lovely find a campsite with a pub that serves fantastic food. We both had chargrilled chicken with prawns and chorizo in a creamy garlic sauce. Chips, tomato and mushrooms served with all grills. Delicious, completely different but perfectly spiced and favoured ,and unbelievably filling - I could not manage a desert and I eat a large dinner. The rear of the pub has a fabulous beer garden with a beautiful large “tent” that is ideal for weddings, parties etc. Lots of outdoor seating and a child friendly area. The campsite has a security barrier entry/exit and grass or hard standing pitches. Optional metered EHU. Fresh water. A grey and black drop point - no drive over MH drain. Bin area. Separate male/female toilet/shower room with good hot showers. The site looks dated and would welcome a a little TLC. Work has started, new paths and hard standing pitch updates. It’s a popular site and everything works well.”
