The Poachers
Quick info
About The Poachers
On Bridge St in Durham, The Poachers is a pub that serves a Chicken Sizzler sizzling hot, alongside Chicken Katsu and a Stacker steak with BBQ sauce, bacon and melted cheese. That gives the menu a mix of hot-plate dishes, a Japanese-style chicken option and a steak for those who want something heavier. Sunday lunch is built around a beef dinner as the standard plate. Guests often queue at the door to be seated, and a wait for food after ordering is common, so the pub suits a relaxed meal with time to spare. Gluten-free choices appear on the menu, and gluten-free Sunday dinners come without Yorkshire puddings.

Customer Review Summary
The caveats are mostly about waiting and detail. Several mention queuing at the door before being seated, and one describes about a 45 minute gap between sitting and receiving food. A Sunday diner who is gluten free received a dinner without Yorkshire puddings despite raising it at booking, and the same visit saw a hair on a plate and a small teapot of boiling water spilling near a baby in a high chair. Another reviewer found the topside beef dinner okay with bland vegetables, then waited with no one asking about dessert, and was told the dessert menu was on a board by the bar.

“Cannot recommend highly enough 💫✨ The best pint of Guinness I have had in a long time and meal was outstanding ✨ The two young men working there today are a true credit to the Poachers.. completely swan like and unflappable.. they really know their trade ✨ Extensive menu from light bites to three course options ✨ Beautiful outdoor area with a huge amount of parking ✨ Pork Belly with Crackling and Black Pudding "somethings" is a new favourite over Sausage and Mash.. an elevated choice and worth every penny ✨✨✨”

“We enjoyed a gorgeous Sunday lunch, we were heading back from the coast and this was on the reviews to try out. It did not disappoint. We had to wait a little while to be seated as I was unable to reserve a table. We had the standard plate and both enjoyed a beef dinner. Highly recommend.”

“We had Sunday dinner here today which was prebooked, we had to Que for a little while but then found our seats. My sister asked for hot water to heat up baby food which was provided but the waiter, as lovely as he was he brought over a very small teapot of boiling water that was pouring out the spout as he was asking us who it was for, we alerted him and he said he was okay, but didn’t seem to register it was spilling out very very close to my 8 month old niece in her high chair. Also my partner is gluten free, and even though I mentioned this whilst booking the table a week before they said not to worry just tell us on the day, which we did and his Sunday dinner didn’t come with any Yorkshire puddings. A lady with long dark hair also placed a dish down with one of her hairs laid neatly over the top, my meal itself was nice the food was good. I just felt terrible for my partner as he loves his Yorkshire puddings and nobody mentions that these won’t be included for gluten free, I would recommend to the poachers to keep some gluten free frozen Yorkshire puddings in the freezer, even from the supermarket or just let people know they won’t be provided when they order/ring up to book and specifically mention gluten free, that way they can make other arrangements.”
