About Hoi Shan
Hoi Shan is a Chinese takeaway in Newton Abbot, at 118 Queen St, serving evenings only from Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays. Salt and pepper chicken is the dish to start with, and salt and pepper chips come alongside it for anyone who wants a matching side. The menu also covers chicken curry and vegetable curry, each made with a curry sauce, and crispy noodles with beef. Orders are placed by phone, so the kitchen takes the request directly and gives a time for it. A mixed starter suits a table that wants to sample several dishes in one order.

Customer Review Summary
Salt and pepper chicken is the dish reviewers raise most, and opinions on it split sharply. One reviewer's son liked it and another found it tasty enough but made of very thin strips, while a third called it inedible, overcooked and rock hard. Curry draws the harshest complaints. One reviewer reports a chicken curry with no chicken in it, and a long-time vegetarian describes a veg curry that tasted only of sweetness with no curry flavour. Both say the man on the phone dismissed them, one claiming the chef does not make mistakes and the other blaming the caller's palate. Others describe soggy, tasteless beef crispy noodles, chewy beef, stale salt and pepper chips, fatty overcooked meat balls and stodgy rice. Several feel the prices are too high for the quality. Positive reviewers praise the mixed starter, food arriving piping hot, polite staff and drivers, and deliveries and collections right on time. One first-time customer was given free noodles at collection.

“I'm mixed with this one I ordered the mixed starter and everything was fantastic, I also got the salt and pepper chicken, it was tasty enough but very thin strips of chicken and it's expensive ,bit of a shame as I love salt and pepper chicken, had it delivered took one and a half hours but it was a Friday night, it came hot so that's a plus.”
