Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the riverside setting, with ducks and swans drifting past the outside tables, and the home cooked food that goes with it. Reviewers single out the fish and chips, the cod and chips, a meaty home made pie, the ploughman's and the halloumi fries, while the Otter Black gets a mention as a wonderful tipple. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and helpful, including at a family gathering after a funeral. The carvery divides opinion. One reviewer calls the Thursday carvery tasty, but two others describe it as poor value, with three small slices of meat, rock hard potatoes, undercooked green beans, a frozen stuffing ball and a quarter of a sausage. One of them also reports the owner being rude to a young staff member and a very young child serving drinks, which the owner disputes in a reply. Smaller complaints include being squeezed onto a two seat table while window tables sat empty, slow lights and smelly gents toilets. One reviewer says the food was beautifully cooked and the portion just the right size.

“Given 2 stars as location is stunning. But my god, the carvery was awful. We left most of it. Rock hard potato's, basic veg, swede sticks (i mean whats that all that about?) Green beans undercooked and squeaky, broad beans (do people even eat those anymore?) Quarter of a sausage, frozen stuffing ball and like warm. So so disappointed and at £18 per plate it was a massive let down. Utterly grim. For such a beautiful location and a roast technically being a simple meal it should be bang on. Won't come again. And yes I sound like a 'karen' but I like food thats worth paying for. And reviews are important.”

“Visited twice whilst on holiday in the area. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The restaurant was busy and food came out quickly. I would highly recommend the ploughman's, it was one of the best I have tried, also the cod and chips were a good sized portion. We will certainly return soon.”

“The Passage House Inn hosted us recently for a small gathering after a family funeral. all staff were so friendly and helpful, from initial booking, on the day and throughout our visit. Food was excellent, great value, coupled with a lovely location and super attentive staff. I couldn't recommend it more highly”

“**EDIT - Owner has replied - You must be mistaking us for another table. We didn’t have 4 carveries nor did we take anything away with us. The level of genuine nastiness you and your husband showed was astounding! You had a literal child taking drinks orders and serving alcohol to tables of people. The way that the angry chef spoke to staff genuinely left me feeling sick. I’m a local, and I urge others not to come here!** We visited for the carvery and unfortunately the experience fell well below expectations. At almost £18 per person, the portion of meat provided (three small slices) felt poor value. Beyond that, the overall environment was disappointing. The owner was openly rude to a young female member of staff, which created an uncomfortable atmosphere for diners. There also appeared to be a very young child working, which raised concerns. When I raised this with the manager, the response lacked any professionalism or willingness to address the issues. Not somewhere we would choose to visit again.”

“Beautiful setting just to sit outside by the river whilst watching the local ducks and swans drift past you. The Otter Black on top is a wonderful tipple. Indoor seating is also available, with the pub having a good reputation for its food.”

“Traditional family owned pub. Set by the river teign, we are lucky to have breathtaking view of the river and the ever-changing wildlife. Great place for walk along the marshes, bird watching or just enjoying nature. We serve home-made seasonal traditional English food. Our menu changes every so often so make sure to check what we have on offer at the time. We look foward to seeing you for a meal, a drink or just a coffee!”
