Quick info
About The Barn Owl
The Barn Owl is a pub with overnight rooms on Aller Mills in Newton Abbot, set in a beamed building with seating in the eaves. The rooms are named after animals, with one called Squirrel, and guests get breakfast as a buffet with a few select options. The bar pours a range of gin and beer, and the beers change with the season. Sunday roast comes with a choice of meats, and lamb is among them. Dining tables look out onto a lawned garden. A private dining room gives groups a space of their own, and dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the Sunday roast, with one praising its wide choice of meats and the lamb, and another calling it delicious. Close behind are the overnight stays, where guests describe clean, comfortable rooms, desk fans provided during the summer heat, and help carrying bags up. A plentiful breakfast gets repeated mentions, and the lasagna and bangers and mash are singled out at dinner. Staff are called friendly, polite and quick, and diners mention generous portions, well-spaced tables and a view of the garden. The bar earns notes for its range of gin and beer. The one real complaint comes from a diner who ordered the "Ultimate" mixed grill: the gammon and chicken were cooked well, but the steak disappointed and the plate looked small for its name and price. The same diner found the chicken, bacon and avocado salad dry, with only a teaspoon of dressing. A couple of reviewers say booking is needed because the pub gets very busy, and one was squeezed in at the last minute after phoning on a Sunday.

“Amazing place, truly a beautiful pub and accommodation, service is wonderful, fast, friendly and always on point. When arriving we were helped up with our bags and from that moment on we were helped with all of our needs. Desk top fans were going when we arrived in our rooms and every effort to help us feel comfortable with the summer heat. Shower water pressure great and hot. Clean, smelt great. Wanted to find out what cleaning product so I could copy at home ! Are booked in again in two weeks time for another 3 night stay and so excited.”

“It’s been a long time since I’ve eaten at the Barn Owl, and after listening to recent comments from friends, and the arrival of my parents for a rare visit we decided to revisit. Upon arrival we were greeted by extremely efficient, smiling staff and were shown to our table. Tables are well spaced with ample elbow room and we were lucky enough to be seated with a view out to the spacious garden. Drink orders were taken at the same time that menus were delivered, and arrived very quickly. The wait between ordering the food and it arriving wasn’t too long, and it arrived warm and well presented. Portions were very generous and we all agreed that it was delicious. Prices aren’t steep when you bear in mind the quality and service, and wouldn’t hesitate to return for another visit. Well worth a try.”

“Visited in June for a wedding held nearby and stayed for a couple of nights. Was a lovely room, breakfast delicious and plentiful and menu for daytime/evening has a great choice. Staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. Had a fantastic stay and would definitely return. Have eaten there previously in passing and always a good meal. Need to book as they get very busy which is great to see for a local business!”
