About The Green Ginger

The Green Ginger is a circular pub in Torquay, built on two levels with large windows facing greenery, the town and the sea. A veranda on the upper level looks over a main road through the town centre, giving drinkers and diners a spot to sit above the street. The menu runs to 161 dishes and serves food all day, from the Traditional Breakfast to The Big Smoke Burger and Small Freshly Battered Fish And Chips. Beer is a focus of the bar, and Worthington's is on the list. Music plays in the evenings. Cider festivals bring extra choices, including a pear cider. Orders go through the app, and the team brings food and drinks to the table.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise quick, friendly service, with drinks ordered through the app reaching the table almost immediately and food arriving fast and piping hot. Diners single out the chicken and tenderstem broccoli and the beef madras, while others mention breakfast, decent chip portions and a pear cider during the cider festival. The upper-level veranda over the main road is popular, and two reviewers like the large windows with views of greenery and the sea. One finds it quieter than most Spoons. The most repeated complaint is the toilets. Two reviewers describe a strong smell in the gents, and one family had to move seats because of an ammonia and urine odour. Service is not uniformly quick. One reviewer found drinks slow and the fish greasy, and another waited with a child and received no food despite three follow-ups, each met with a promise of five more minutes. One reviewer notes staff turning up to clear and clean tables as soon as they were vacated.

“Very disappointing experience at The Green Ginger. I waited an entire hour after placing my order and still received no food. I followed up with the staff three times, and each time they told me “five more minutes,” yet nothing arrived. I was waiting with my child, which made the situation even more frustrating. My holiday time was wasted just sitting there waiting. Truly a regrettable experience.”

“Wow,had the chicken and tenderstem 🥦 broccoli for lunch today, it was beautiful. My partner had the beef madras which she enjoyed and including drinks was just over £20,great quality and great prices, well done wetherspoon. And also good job by the staff, whenever a table was vacated,a member of staff would turn up clear and clean.”

“We popped in with the kids as they needed the toilet and a drink. We only ordered two bowls of chips as a snack for them — the portions were a decent size for the money, and the drink prices were good as always. Unfortunately, the only real let‑down was the seating. We were sat near the men’s toilets but had to move because the smell of ammonia/urine was unbearable. We would have considered coming back another time for a main meal, but the cleanliness of the toilets has put us off, as this reflects on the overall standard of the establishment.”

“Popped in here as was staying at the Caledonian Hotel round the corner. it was busy but still able to get a table for me and my mate, service was instant and staff friendly. food was delivered really fast by a cheery staff member, free refills of coffee and a good place to relax and chat. Only downside was the smell in gents toilets that was really strong, although toilet seemed clean enough, just the smell of the place.”
