Quick info
About Kimchi Planet Newcastle Uni
Kimchi Planet Newcastle Uni is a Korean restaurant on B1 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, working as a small cafe that takes walk-ins rather than reservations. The menu is a short one rather than a long list, built around rice bowls, with the kimchi rice bowl and the spicy chicken rice bowl among them, alongside sushi, noodle soups and stir fried and rice dishes. Drinks run to a few less common soft options, including watermelon soda. Seating inside is limited, so many orders go out as takeaway, and delivery runs through Deliveroo for anyone eating off site. A step-free entrance keeps the door usable for visitors with mobility needs. Service runs weekday daytimes only, with the doors closed Saturdays and Sundays, which makes it a lunchtime stop rather than an evening one. Parking close by is slim, so arriving on foot is the simpler approach.

Customer Review Summary
Rice bowls draw the most praise, especially the spicy chicken rice bowl and the kimchi rice bowl, which reviewers call big in portion and great value. Close behind are the Korean kimchi pancakes, a sushi roll with Korean BBQ and hotteok for dessert, which one reviewer likens to apple pie. The watermelon soda and pear juice get singled out as refreshing, unusual soft drinks. A reviewer who lived in Korea calls the food authentic, with flavours that felt like a family run place in Seoul, and several describe it as fresh, quickly made and reasonably priced, with a decent choice for vegetarians. The complaints are practical. Reviewers mention limited seating, no on site restroom, a small menu, short hours with no weekend opening, and slim parking. One had to eat outside in the rain after failing to find the suggested seating near the Coop, and another wanted more meat in the dishes. One reviewer says a Deliveroo driver took their order and never delivered it, and the restaurant followed up with the app until the food arrived.

“Cons A little tricky to find but worth the search. The hours of business are short and no weekend opening. No area to sit and eat so I was outside in the rain ( I was told there was a place to sit near the Coop but couldn’t find it) Pros Delicious food! The kimchi rice bowl was great value and great portion size. Food was cooked fresh.”

“Kimchi planet has the most delicious, flavorful, and amazing authentic Korean street food. I’m so happy to have found this gem and will definitely be coming back. Also, Deliveroo messed up my order and the first driver took the food from the restaurant and never delivered it, but they were so diligent and followed up with me and deliveroo to make sure that I got my food and it was really sweet.”
