About Kafeneon

Kafeneon is a Greek restaurant at 8 Bigg Market in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and it has been serving the city since 1998. The kitchen cooks Greek dishes such as lamb kleftiko and moussaka, and gyros are on the menu too. A mixed plate for two gives a table a way to share several dishes at once. Cocktails sit alongside the food, and a dessert cocktail can finish the meal in place of a sweet course. The inside dining area is downstairs and carries a Greek-themed decor. Guests can bring their dogs along. An NE1 discount is offered.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise the Greek food itself, from lamb kleftiko so tender it falls apart, to gyros, flavourful yemista with perfectly cooked rice, and mixed plates of moussaka, stifado, and meze with pides, hummus, and tsatsiki. Portion sizes impress, and dishes arrive piping hot and without a long wait. Close behind are the desserts, including a cocktail dessert served in a champagne flute, fudge cake, chocolate cake, and an ice cream fudge sundae with just the right sweetness. Reviewers also mention decor that feels like a Greek island, friendly staff, reasonable prices, and outdoor seating that is great for people watching. Two birthday parties describe warm treatment. One was surprised with a complimentary fudge cake, and the other found no vegan dessert available, so staff brought out decorated flapjacks and did not charge for them.

“I ordered the lamb kleftiko and it was sooo tender. I barely touched it and it just fell apart! So delcious melts in your mouth its fantastic! Also my mum ordered the Yemista which was flavourful and the rice was perfectly cooked. We had the ice cream fudge sundae and it was amazing and actually just the right amount of sweetness we loved it. The atmosphere was so cosy and represented Greece very well! Definetely recommend. Servers were so polite and kind. 10/10 will come again.”

“We chose this place because of its reviews, plus it was close to where we were staying in the city overnight. Really easy to find, and what an amazing find it is. Having lived in Cyprus for several years, I love Greek food and this is exactly what I was after this evening. The exterior was brigh and inviting whether you wanted to eat in or alfresco. We were met by a really friendly member of staff and given the option of where we wanted to done, so we choose inside, downstairs. Once you went into the dining area, it was like you were transported to one of the Greek islands as the decor just took you away from the middle of Newcastle. The service was excellent, very efficient, knowledgeable and every member of staff smiled. When it came to the menu, it wasn't over burdened with choices that no one will ever eat, but were put there for someone's ego. It was straight to the point, which was perfect. Once ordered, the food arrived in a really good time, was so tasty and certainly made you want more. Dessert was a cocktail dessert, served in a champagne flute. This was something we just had to have and, again, was not disappointed. The bill was not exorbitant and worth every penny. This restaurant gets full top marks for everything, and I cannot recommend it enough. A restaurant that transforms you to another place, has amazing food, lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Thank you, we will be back.”
