About INSA Korean BBQ

INSA Korean BBQ is a Korean barbecue restaurant in Newcastle Upon Tyne, at 34 Osborne Rd, where diners cook the meat themselves on a charcoal grill at the table. It is the sister restaurant to Soju & Gogi in the city centre. The meat range includes F1 Wagyu graded marble 8+ and Spanish Iberico pork, both made for the table grill. Korean fried chicken is on the menu as a starter and a main, so a meal does not have to be built entirely around the grill. Vegetarian and vegan options sit alongside the meat dishes. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays.

“Enjoyed a meal with friends here tonight. Service was fantastic, our waiter (unfortunately didn’t get his name) was brilliant - so welcoming and gave great recommendations for food. The food itself was absolutely delicious and so reasonably priced. We would’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone and will definitely be back!”

“I chose this restaurant to celebrate a birthday with my husband and a friend, and it was a truly lovely experience. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, perfect for a special occasion. The staff were friendly and attentive, taking great care of us throughout the evening. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. Overall, we had a great time and would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking to celebrate an important moment.”

“Excellent experience at this new-ish Korean restaurant with BBQ options. As a Korean-American love seeing the continuing expansion of Korean options in Newcastle. Brought two English pals with me for their first Korean experience with Korean cuisine and am happy to say it was a big hit with them. Not surprisingly the BBQ meats were very popular. The biggest surprise of the night was Sizzling Cheesy Sweetcorn. I had low expectations but one of my friends insisted and it turned out be a big hit. Happy to recommend INSA and we look forward to returning soon.”

“I’ve been coming here for the past 3 years - and it is by far the best food place in Jesmond. The staff are great, and while it isn’t always the busiest (I don’t know how!!!), the atmosphere is still good (especially after they turn down the lighting at 7pm!!). I come here with my partner for romantic date nights, as well as with friends and family for more of a fun drinking night - soju and beer - unreal! While the BBQ is fun, we tend to get other dishes - tteobboki, bulgogi beef, korean fried chicken, kimchi stew, prawns - just a few of our favourites. Would highly recommend INSA, especially if you are a group and want a good night with drinks and something fun to do - or if you are a party of 2 and want just fantastic and interesting food.”

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the charcoal BBQ meats, with the bulgogi beef called easy to cook and the meat quality described as very good. Close behind is the Korean fried chicken, which one diner ranks the best they have had, alongside the kimchi. Others praise the sizzling cheesy sweetcorn, a surprise hit for one table, and regulars also order tteokbokki, kimchi stew and prawns, with soju and beer for group nights. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, welcoming and attentive, and several describe a good atmosphere for birthdays and date nights. Value draws mixed views. Some call it reasonably priced with generous portions, while one reviewer finds the portions small for the cost. Cooking time is the other recurring note: one says the chicken took a while to cook fully, and another says a large party's meats take a while on the grill. One reviewer also found the room too quiet, with no background music, until more diners arrived.
