About Dabbawal Jesmond

Dabbawal Jesmond is an Indian restaurant in Newcastle Upon Tyne, found down a back street by West Jesmond Metro at 1 Brentwood Ave. The menu takes its cue from the street food of Mumbai's food carts, with tandoor grills, curries, wraps, dosas and thalis. The Dabba Sunday Roast gives the traditional roast an Indian twist, with smoky tandoor meats, golden saffron mash and spice-roasted veggies. Rogan Josh made with lamb is a main to look for, and a mango salad is among the starters. Small plates and sides come in serving dishes that suit sharing. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available, and dogs are welcome. Reservations are required. Limited free parking is available with a permit obtained on arrival.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often point to the Sunday roast, describing an Indian-style take with smoky flavours that "compares to no other", and the apple crumble with cinnamon and vanilla custard gets its own praise. Close behind are the curries and starters: the Rogan Josh, Chicken Madras, Coconut Lamb Pepper Fry, mango salad, smoked broccoli and Malabari prawns all earn mentions, along with generous portions and meat cooked well. Staff are repeatedly called polite, kind and attentive, and one group says the team welcomed their labrador with a water bowl and treats. Reviewers also like the heated outdoor-indoor area and a roof that does not echo. The caveats are mixed. One diner found the Parsi Dhansak, Rogan Josh and pilau rice bland despite well-cooked meat, and another found the cocktails far too sweet. A third could not hear their husband over the din from closely seated groups. One diner thought the starter portions small, while another praised a Sunday roast finished with a spring breeze cocktail.

“Came for a 21st birthday celebration. We brought our labrador and the accommodated him beautifully with a water bowl lots of pets and dog treats. We sat in their outdoor-indoor area which had heated lamps and felt super cosy. The food was delicious and came very quickly and the staff were so polite attentive and kind. Well Absolutely would come again.”

“Our first visit here and we were very impressed. The interior is lovely and very clean and tidy. The staff are great very polite and helpful, as for the Sunday roast dinner, it was amazing all the different Indian flavours complimenting each other. The Apple crumble with cinnamon and vanilla custard was perfect, along with a glass of spring breeze cocktail that finished the meal off nicely. We will definitely be returning soon to try out their other food options what a hidden gem!”

“Hidden place, great atmosphere. Meat was cooked well. Cocktails were far too sweet.”

“Dabbawal in Jesmond has been a staple in (one of) our lives for well over a decade - bringing Mumbai’s vibrant street food culture to Geordie Suburbia. As regulars, we took a chance while with friends to veer away from our ‘standard’ dishes, and we weren’t disappointed. We ordered from across the spectrum, with a Coconut Lamb Pepper Fry, a Chicken Madras, a Rogan Josh and even a portion of the Paneer Makhani Masala (as a carnivore who still sees himself as a ‘growing lad’, I would normally steer clear of non-meat dishes when out!). Portions are healthy, enough to feed your Average Joe comfortably - splitting a couple of pilau rices and a couple of naans between 4 alongside our main dishes covered our appetites well! The atmosphere and the serving dishes almost encourage the sharing of dishes, and when you’re somewhere with the breadth of flavours as Dabbawal, you’d be mad not to. We love it here, and can’t wait to make an excuse to find ourselves back dining at Dabbawal in Jesmond again very soon; our only regret was not realising that their limited time Bengali menu only runs Monday - Thursday… maybe we’ll be back sooner than we thought!”
