About Blakes

Blakes is a coffee shop in Newcastle Upon Tyne, at 53 Grey St, with a large breakfast menu at its centre. Stotties come filled with sausage, bacon and egg, and a Veggie Breakfast Plate covers the vegetarian side. The Full English can be customised, for example without tomato, and the kitchen cooks food fresh to order. Coffee, lattes, mocha, hot chocolate and tea by the teapot make up the hot drinks, with cakes to finish. Wine and beer sit alongside them for anyone who wants something else. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Breakfast is the draw at Blakes, and the Full English is what reviewers name most. One praises the mushrooms for not being greasy, and another says the kitchen left off the tomato without any debate. Pancakes and stotties with sausage, bacon and egg also come up, along with big portions and cakes to finish. Coffee is close behind, with the mocha described as rich without being too much, plus piping hot lattes and hot chocolates and an earl grey tea. Reviewers describe friendly, efficient staff and a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and one says the food is cooked fresh to order and cheaper than a hotel breakfast. The main caveat is that the place gets very busy, and one reviewer advises getting there early. One finds the Veggie Breakfast Plate filling enough but wishes a more substantial option replaced the spinach. Regulars mention returning for family brunches at Christmas.

“Really great cozy spot in a lovely part of the city. Perfect for when you're looking for a relaxing place in town. The food and coffee was perfect, will 100% be back.”
  • Steve Morrison
“Visited a couple of times and highly recommend here. The food and service are both excellent. The prices are very reasonable. There's a huge selection of dishes, so if you want a proper large breakfast you can have that, or something lighter. Coffee is very good. The Mocha was really rich without being too much. Best of all, when I ordered the Full English without tomato, that's what was served. There was no debate about it. I will definitely be back to try more from the menu.”

“Blakes was fantastic! We went there on a Saturday as they opened at 7:30am to have breakfast. We got the full English breakfast with coffee and earl grey tea. The mushrooms were not greasy at all, every item was just right. The whole meal was well enjoyed and did not sit in my stomach feeling greasy and undigested. The service was also very lovely and warm.”
  • Peter McDermott
“Really nice breakfast and coffee. Friendly and efficient service. Great atmosphere.”
  • Dennis Bauszus
“An American style breakfast / dinner place with a nice decor offering great coffee and tasty breakfast options.”
