About WC Newcastle

WC Newcastle is a cocktail bar in Newcastle Upon Tyne, set underground in a facility built in the 1800s and since repurposed as a bar. The small room keeps period features and decor from the original building. The cocktail menu is extensive and includes mocktails, with the WC Mai Tai and a mango and chilli Capriana among the named drinks. Wine and champagne are poured as well, alongside vodka and gin cocktails. Drinks come to the table through table service, and a happy hour runs for those who want to start early. The bar is open daily. A sister bar nearby goes by the name GC.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return to the cocktails above all, with the Mai Tai named most often, in a cherry version and as the WC Mai Tai, and a mango and chilli cocktail also singled out. Diners describe the drinks as full of flavour, strong, fresh and good value, and mocktails get praise too. Close behind are the small, quirky, lively room, its period features and music, and friendly staff, with one family singling out a server who made them feel welcome. One couple celebrating an anniversary received a free glass of champagne on arrival. The criticism is smaller but specific. One reviewer calls a white Russian watered down, tasting of milk with no discernible vodka or Kahlua, and describes a disappointing spritzer, cramped tables, a bored waiter and bar staff chatting instead of making drinks. Another found a lemon cocktail very mild for its cost, and a third says some drinks did not match their menu descriptions. A few note finding the last available seats without booking.

“WORST COCKTAIL I'VE EVER HAD. Brief rundown, Tables are crammed in so you're sitting on top of each other. Waiter had a bad attitude and just couldn't be bothered. The cocktail menu online is different to what's there. I ordered a white Russian and it was the worst I've ever had, tasted of watered down milk, no cream and couldn't taste any vodka or Kahula, it was shocking. My friend ordered the spritzer and she said it was very disappointing. waiter staff and bar staff just talking to each other and not concentrating on making cocktails or customers. I would suggest that people avoid this place, there are far better cocktail bars in the town.”

“Superb cocktail bar in a really unusual setting. We were celebrating our anniversary and they gave us a free glsss of champagne on arrival, which we followed up with 3 different cocktails each which were both delicious and strong! Great staff, good music and a fab atmosphere.”

“Really nice place for cocktails. Excellent value, really good range. Some drinks we had maybe weren't as executed as described but service was amazing, fantastic atmosphere & would definitely go again!”

“W visited yesterday afternoon as a family for a couple of drinks in the sunshine. The cocktails were fantastic but what stood out for us was the exceptional service we received from the lass that was working. She was an absolute joy, made us feel really welcome, was very helpful and generally managed to brighten up an already bright day. She is an absolute credit to your business and we wanted to make sure we fed this back. Keep up the great work!”

“We were on a date night and stumbled past here and thought we’d give it a try, we didn’t book and there was a table available luckily. I have to say pleasantly surprised, the cocktails were fantastic, full of flavour, and more importantly full of booze. Which you can’t always say in cocktail places these days. We had the mango and chilli Capriana, and the WC Mai Tai, both were packed full of flour and very tasty. We will definitely be back, highly recommend.”
