About Mother Mercy

Mother Mercy is a cocktail bar in Newcastle Upon Tyne, set in a basement near the cloth market, off Bigg Market, with a speakeasy feel. Its Twist of Fate challenge leaves the choice to a gumball machine: spin it and the bar serves you a random cocktail. The list also includes drinks with unusual names, among them Cold Noodle Soup and Fluffy Banana. Bar bites and dumplings sit alongside the drinks. Small round tables share the room with low ceilings, and there are seats at the bar as well. The team serves at the table and brings a jug of water with the order. Walk-ins are taken without a booking on a Saturday evening, and allergies are accommodated.

Customer Review Summary

The Fluffy Banana is the cocktail reviewers name most, described as smooth, creamy and easy to drink, and one reviewer highly recommends it. Close behind are the bar staff, called friendly, helpful and passionate, whose drink recommendations led diners to a sour, the spicy Tom Yum, a Turkish delight negroni and a toffee apple sour. Others praise the Mango Diablo and the vodka and gin martinis. The menu leans fancier than classic, with names like Cold Noodle Soup and Mirrorball, and reviewers describe a hidden, cosy basement with speakeasy and jazz vibes, a calm retreat from the busy streets nearby. One reviewer notes that a cocktail made non-alcoholic still costs the same price, and another says the bar accommodates allergies well. Several enjoyed the Twist of Fate option, where a spin of a gumball machine delivers a random drink.

“A hidden oasis of calm on a Saturday night, moments from Bigg Market. Interesting cocktails, asked for a recommendation & the spicy Tom Yum was great. Lovely staff, friendly, engaging & passionate about their work.”

“This was my first time in Mother Mercy and was unsure what to expect. I liked the idea of a small, hidden, exclusive underground bar, like an upmarket version of those found in Prague - it didn't disappoint. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, we felt wanted and appreciated. Warm friendly staff who couldn't do enough for you. Admittedly, we didn't have food but the cocktails were fantastic - there was herbs and citrus fruits in the ones I had so, to hell with it - 5 stars for the food! Thank you Mother Mercy, we will meet again. :)”

“Stopped in while waiting for a restaurant reservation and it was a great retreat from the craziness of the alley. Quiet, well decorated with passionate bartenders making amazing suggestions. Super grateful to the hostess as well for her suggestions for places to visit during our day trip to Tynemouth. Can't wait to come back again and recommend anyone who loves speakeasy environments and unique cocktails to stop in.”
