  “Cannot recommend enough. Dog friendly and very spacious inside (good for our big dog). Staff were incredibly welcoming and chatty, and the food was insane (I'll be dreaming of those Chicken skewers for weeks). Likely to be regulars after the first visit!”

  “Have a few drinks in here while passing. Staff are pleasant, and there’s a good selection of drinks. They have breakfast and lunch menus, though I have not tried the food yet. Tranquil background music and reruns of Laurel and Hardy on the TVs. There are private function areas to hire. Clean and tidy tavern.”

  “Do not give this place your any business, if you are British, as they don't want your custom they hate their own country men and women, they hate their own countries flag ,do not go their during England playing in world Cup you will not be welcome as they take offence to the English flag, or the union Jack or any of our countries flags ! We can no longer keep supporting business that hate us ,who support foreign countries over their who support foreigners over their own people..if you went in with an lgbtq flag or a Palestinian flag or even a Ukrainian flag you would welcome, so the issue isn't the flags its our flag ,the staff are rude the owner is rude ,so its time this business got a wake up call to who exactly keeps them in business! This business and any business who refuse custom to their own people should not be in business, this is no way to run a business ,these people are traitors and should be treated as such ...very unprofessional very racist towards white British people who's only crime is loving their own country and not ashame of our countries flag ! So I do not recommend this awful place, its time to start hittibg these people where it hurts their pockets! Oh and the food isn't great either tbh poor customer service a very unwelcoming vibe all round .zero stars”

  “Just a great pub. Lovely atmosphere, good selection of drinks, always has friendly faces in and we end up chatting to total strangers. This is our calling spot before seeing gigs at the city hall, just along the road. Love coming here and will be back again.”

  “The City Tavern hosted a surprise 30th birthday celebration for my partner and honestly, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience from start to finish. Tom and the team were incredibly accommodating throughout the entire planning process and made everything feel so easy and stress-free. Nothing was too much trouble — from helping organise arrival drinks and food timings to allowing us to decorate the space and play our own music. The food was great, the cocktails went down very well, and the whole evening ran so smoothly. The atmosphere was brilliant and everyone had such a good time. Thank you again to everyone at City Tavern for helping make such a special celebration so memorable. We’re very grateful and would absolutely recommend for private events and functions 😊”

  “I’ve visited many times and have always been impressed by the quality of both the food and the drinks. The menu goes well beyond standard pub fare, with carefully prepared dishes and a wide, thoughtfully chosen range of beverages to suit all tastes. Just as importantly, the atmosphere is consistently friendly and welcoming. I’ve often visited with friends and colleagues from different backgrounds, and the staff, an ethnically diverse and highly customer focused team, have always been warm, professional, and inclusive. I have never witnessed anything like the negative claims made elsewhere. Based on my repeated experiences, this is a well run venue that takes pride in excellent hospitality, and I am very happy to recommend it.”

  “Since moving away from the town centre to Hexham we don’t frequent this place anywhere near as often as we used to, having been previous regular visitors because of a great atmosphere, good beer and quality food however, having returned today and ordered a Sunday Lunch, it’s fair to say that we won’t be returning anytime soon! The atmosphere and the beer is still worth the visit but I would strongly suggest that you either eat prior to your visit or somewhere afterwards. The wasn’t wasn’t roasted as advertised it was boiled, and boiled to death & grey in colour. There was more fat than beef in all honesty. The gravey was tasteless and like water, the mash potatoes were also a vey weird shade of grey, not very appetising whatsoever. My wife had the chicken and instantly suffered from dehydration as the chicken was dryer that an Egyptian's sandal. Avoid the food at all costs, otherwise still a nice place for a pint and a good atmosphere, but eat there at your own peril!”

  “I didnt get food at this fine establishment just yet but I got drinks a plenty and let me tell you good people I had a brilliant time. The decor is very unique and the drinks are equally as unique and the service is very pleasant indeed. It was busy and chairs were sparse but fortunately god gave me legs to stand on so I used them for as long as the beer let me. Would highly recommend 👌 👍.”

  “We had the upstairs for a private event, but the whole of the tavern was gorgeous and fun! The decor was neat, the drinks fresh, and the service impeccable. Fair warning - they aren't joking about the 'giant' Yorkshire pudding, it spans a huge dinner plate!”
