Quick info
About Rochester Relish
Rochester Relish is a cafe on Rochester in Newcastle Upon Tyne, billed as the last cafe before Scotland on the A68, which makes it a stop for drivers heading toward the border. Chickens roam the garden outside. The kitchen makes fish finger sandwiches to order, and on Ffridays it serves fish and chips with mushy peas, curry sauce or gravy. Those can be pre-ordered. Homemade cakes sit alongside the savoury food. The cafe is walk-in, so there is no table booking. Deli items are also on sale.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the fish: fish finger sandwiches on soft bread that "melted away", and Friday takeaway fish and chips with moist fish, mushy peas, curry sauce or gravy. Close behind is the BLT on homemade focaccia, which two reviewers call the best they have had, along with chips described as "to die for". Others praise the flat white and latte, homemade cake and scones, a large cheese and onion pie taken away, and the pies generally. Food is made to order, and the chickens roaming the garden keep diners entertained while they wait. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, with one reviewer contrasting them with "fake friendly". The one caveat comes from a reviewer who notes no gluten free toast or cakes for coeliacs, and that the restrooms may be hard to reach with limited mobility. One diner who asked for a bigger cup for tea was happily accommodated.

“Absolutely stunning cafe on the border with Scotland. The food is delicious and cooked to order. I had fish finger sandwiches. The bread was so soft it was like eating a cloud, the fish just melted away in the mouth. A wide range of cakes and savory pastries were also available. Definitely worth a visit. The staff were Absolutely brilliant. I cant praise this establishment enough.”

“Super friendly service, best latte and quality breakfast. Would definitely stop there again. If you have limited mobility, it might not be possible to reach the restrooms and there wasn’t a gluten free option (if Coeliac) toast or cakes, but you could still have a good breakfast and service with a smile.”
