About Mainwaring Arms
Mainwaring Arms is a pub on Whitmore Rd in Newcastle Under Lyme, with a rum selection that includes a Rum bible. The kitchen serves pub classics such as steak pie, and afternoon tea comes with sandwiches, a scone, cream and jam. An open fire burns in winter, and the rooms are lit by candles. Dogs are welcome, so walkers can bring their pets along. Tables for eating cannot be booked, and with no seating at the bar, people stand and wait for a table.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the pub food, with steak pie and homemade chips, and fish and chips named as pub classics, and close behind a green Thai curry with sea bass and a large ginger cake with honeycomb pudding. Afternoon tea draws comment for tasty sandwiches on wholemeal bread and a quality scone with cream and jam. Several describe the lunch menu as good value, with large Caesar and feta salad plates. The rum selection, including a rum bible, gets repeated mention alongside ales, a decent wine list and a real beer offering. Staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere as candlelit, quaint and traditional, with an open fire in winter and a dog friendly welcome. The recurring drawbacks are practical: one reviewer notes you cannot book to eat and there is no seating at the bar, so people stand and wait while others finish, and another found the room a tad noisy. One busy Monday evening, diners were quoted a long wait for food, yet it arrived well before that.

“What a pub! Drove past it a number of times and finally went in and have been coming regularly ever since. Superb candlelit ambiance, historic pub, delicious ales (and reasonably priced to boot!) and a selection a rums that would delight any pirate! Attentive friendly bar staff and a dog friendly pub. Cant ask for much more!”

“Using gift cards for Afternoon Tea. Very tasty sandwiches on tasty soft wholemeal bread. Size of sandwich adequate, leaving room for quality scone, cream and jam. Brought cake home for later. Service was good. Pleasant, helpful staff. Atmosphere was good, if a tad noisy. All in all enjoyable experience.”

“Gorgeous steak pie, filled with meat, homemade chips and gravy. Absolutely beautiful so glad we tried it, and we now have a new favourite pie spot. Also nice outdoor area, plenty of parking ar the back and well accessible from the road.”
