About The Duke of York

Set in a village next to the Wedgwood Estate, The Duke of York is a pub, bar and restaurant on Longton Rd in Stoke On Trent, with parking on site for anyone driving in. Steaks anchor the menu, ordered with a choice of toppings and sauces including Steak Diane and Drunken Bullock, and they come plated with hand-cut chips, minted peas, mushrooms and onion rings. The kitchen also serves a Sunday beef dinner, so booking ahead is advised. Ales are on the bar alongside the pumps. Dogs are welcome in the bar area, while a separate restaurant area and a back room give diners who would rather sit apart somewhere to eat. A step-free, wheelchair-accessible entrance helps visitors with mobility needs, and outdoor seating opens up eating in the open air. The pub opens daily and runs a quiz night.

Customer Review Summary

Steak dominates the praise, with diners singling out the Steak Dianne and Drunken Bullock served with hand cut chips, minted peas, mushrooms and onion rings, and one calling it the best they had eaten in a long time. Close behind sit the steak and ale pie, awarded ten out of ten by a lifelong pie eater, the hunters chicken, a mushroom starter taken as a main, and a Sunday beef dinner that brought one reviewer straight back. Portions are described as large and the kitchen as happy to make changes on request. Ale draws steady approval, with Doombar, Sea Fury and Bass named, though one visitor found the Bass putrid while rating the Sauvignon delicious. Dissent is detailed: one describes loud, crude language from men at the bar, including someone later identified as the new owner, left unchecked by staff, another felt unwelcome, found no water for their dog and left drinks unfinished, and one found food reduced to visiting vans. A few call the decor worn, and several mention booking, one finding it tricky, another urging it for Sunday dinner.

“Thought it was going to be nice as the houses around it are beautiful, but no, absolute dive, no beer garden to speak of, said dog friendly, but no water available ( luckily I had my own) just felt like if you weren't a regular, you weren't welcome. Landlord came out, didnt smile, or greet us. Didn't even finish our drinks. Wouldn't go back.”

“Nice pub in a lovely village location. It was early doors and the bar was very busy, the back room much less so. The beer (ale) was very good quality. Would go back.”

“Absolutely appalled by the loud middle/latter aged men who sat at bar using the most disgusting language, especially an Irish man. They were quite obviously locals. Staff never told them to quieten down either. Even my husband (ex miner) couldn’t get out quick enough. Zero consideration for other pub dwellers. Offensive, crude, loud, bombastic & downright unpleasant! Never in my adult years have I experienced such disrespect & blatant disregard for others including the children present. We visited in the hope this would be our local yet felt we were in the middle of the roughest pub in the equally roughest part of the Potteries. At one point the friendly barmaid asked if the Sauvignon was to my liking and the loud mouthed Irish bloke interrupted her, she said I’m talking to a customer whereas he replied ‘tell them to ‘four letter word’ off’! This was banter but what a way to create a new customer base as we later found out he was the new owner. Simply cannot believe how low respect, dignity & manners have fallen in the UK! Our money will continue to be spent in the likes of Shoulder of Mutton in Fulford where there is zero tolerance for this shameful behaviour, The Black Lion in Cheddleton, Butchers Arms in Forsbrook Royal Exchange in Stone etc. Having seen an ex Stoke footballer, who runs a delightful pub in Cheddleton leave a few days ago we were hoping it would be of a similar calibre. How wrong we were. Once visited and couldn’t get out quick enough. On a positive the Sauvignon was delicious but pint of Bass putrid!”

“Pub no longer does food, just visiting food vans in then evening. Service was OK and they still do a good pint. Can't really comment on the atmosphere as we were the only patrons at the rime which maybe says it all.”
  • Caitlin Howells
“Fantastic food and lovely staff. Service was quick and the food came out quick too so we werent waiting ages. Food portions were great and the price was worth it. Not too expensive either. Definitely get what you pay for. I had the hunters chicken which came out great. No complaints and they are happy to make any changes to your meal if asked. Definitely worth a visit.”
