Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the beer, with a locally made stout and a good range of ales, lagers and ciders drawing repeated praise. Close behind is the bring-your-own-food arrangement: the pub serves no food, but several note that staff supply plates and cutlery for takeaways, and a kiosk at the back lets people order from the pizza place next door. Others mention the welcome for dogs, a community feel where strangers end up chatting, chesterfield sofas, a fire going, and live music in the function room. Staff are described as friendly, and one reviewer praises the owner's funny social media videos. The one critical note comes from a three-star reviewer who was served a stout poured too quickly with no proper head and argued that a stout should have a substantial head. Visitors also mention stopping in for a drink after the Witch Walks around Manningtree and Mistley, and several describe pizzas arriving from next door to eat at the table.

“Awesome Pub - bring your own takeaway or get pizza next door. Always good atmosphere.”
  • Kate Burton
“One of those pubs that actually delivers on the promise of being a proper local. The Red Lion has a community feel that’s rare – you’re as likely to end up in conversation with a stranger as you are to sit quietly with a drink. The staff are friendly without being performative about it. The lady running the midweek evening shifts in particular is warm, attentive, and clearly enjoys the job. Tom the owner is also worth a mention – his social media actually reflects the personality of the pub rather than just advertising at you, which suggests someone who genuinely cares about the place. They don’t serve food, but they’ve thought about it properly. Bring in whatever takeaway you like and they’ll sort you out with plates and cutlery. There’s also a kiosk at the back where you can order from the pizza restaurant next door (same owners) and pick up from there. It’s a neat solution that keeps the pub feeling like a pub.”
  • John Bailey
“First time visit for live music in the function room. Very impressed with the pub, the beer, the service and facilities. Really nice 👍🏽. We'll be back 🙂 And maybe we'll try the food next time - there is a pizza bar in one of the areas.”
  • Casey Boyles
“Lovely little pub in this “Tiny Town”. Great selection of local beers, a landlord with some uniquely funny social media videos. The pub doesn’t serve food but provides for you to take your own. We had pizzas from the pizza place next door. Comfortable chesterfield sofas and quirky toilets.”
