The Butt & Oyster is a pub on Pinmill Rd in Ipswich, set on the shoreline of the Orwell estuary at Pin Mill and part of Deben Inns since 2001. As an Adnams pub, it serves local beers from barrels behind the bar, with Ghost Ship among the cask ales. The kitchen works through seafood specials and fish and chips. Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the riverside setting, with views of the estuary from the outdoor seating and a number of the inside tables, and the walks around Pin Mill. Fish and chips is the dish named most, with one reviewer calling it a serious winner and wondering what is in the batter. Close behind is the food generally, described as plentiful, good quality and better than average pub grub, alongside Adnams beers and friendly, accommodating staff. A few mention the pub is mainly given over to restaurant space and has many different eating rooms. Parking is the recurring complaint: the pub's own car park and the one nearby are small and get very full, and one reviewer mentions a 15 minute walk from the main road car park. Another notes the climb back up from the public car park could be hard for the less mobile. One suggests being mindful of the tide when parking close by and staying higher up if unsure, and another was glad to have booked early and out of season for a party of seven.

“Great location. Friendly staff. Very good food. Be mindful of the tide when parking your vehicle close by. If uncertain stay a bit higher and walk down to the pub.”

“A simply beautiful pub and the fish and chips are a serious winner. Not sure what’s in the batter, but don’t change it. Ideal location for a cool beverage when the sun is shining.”

“Sensational one-of-a-kind pub that beautifully holds onto it's East coast maritime heritage. Set on the shoreline among wrecked historic boats and mud pools, yet right next to a pretty village green that is surrounded by traditional boat builders. Quality local beers from barrels behind the bar, unvarnished wooden bar rooms, some of which seem to have a log fire for winter months. Midsummer you can eat in the courtyard with the sound of the river and the oystercatchers and curlews. Magical”

“A lovely pub with a great setting right on the estuary. Fish and chips and beer were both good. Other menu items looked good as well. Walking down from the public car park is OK, but getting back might be a little more of a challenge for the less mobile, nothing the pub can do about it, but worth keeping in mind. Great view of the estuary from the outdoor seating and from a number of the inside tables as well 👍”

“Lovely pub right on the waterfront with great walks all around the area. The staff were very accommodating over our 5 visits and the food was definitely better than your average pub grub! Being an Adnams pub you are also spoilt for choice of beers.”

“The Butt and Oyster is a dog-friendly riverside pub on the River Orwell, part of Deben Inns since 2001. Famous for its historic charm, it has appeared in Lovejoy, the 1950s film Ha’penny Breeze, and one of Ed Sheeran’s music videos. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it serves seafood specials, Sunday roasts, and classic pub dishes, alongside Adnams cask ales, including Ghost Ship. Enjoy a window table with views of ghost boats and long boats on the river, or relax in front of the wood fire. Perfect for walkers, cyclists, families, and dog owners seeking authentic Suffolk riverside dining.”
