Quick info
About Ape and Apple
Ape and Apple is a large open plan pub in Manchester city centre, on John Dalton St, and it opens daily. Upstairs, a function room with a buffet option hosts events, and it has been used for work meetings and a retirement get-together. A seating area and a partly covered smokers' area are also upstairs. Screens show football, including City games, with the sound on, and the Six Nations also appears on them. The drinks list includes Best Bitter. On the food menu, a Smash'd burger range sits alongside a curry offer, and fries are not included in the burger price. A wait for food is common on busy match days. The pub appeared in the 2019 edition of the Good Pub Guide.

Customer Review Summary
Friendly staff are the most common thread, with reviewers describing a lovely atmosphere and a good place to meet friends. Close behind is the football, with many screens, the City game shown with the sound on, and the Six Nations. The upstairs function room hosted a full day work meeting and a retirement gathering, where the buffet was praised for its quality and range. Other reviewers single out the Best Bitter and a simple curry offer after a long walk. Food draws the sharpest complaints. One regular says a varied pub menu was replaced by a smash burger menu, with a smaller double burger, a bun they call cheap, and fries no longer included. Two others skipped ordering because of a massive wait for food, and one notes only two bar staff working during City v Arsenal. One Saturday visitor found the atmosphere flat. Even the reviewer unhappy with the new menu still calls the staff wonderful and says they will return once decent pub lunches are back.

“Ryan and the team organised my retirement get together in the Function room. Can’t thank them enough for making it so special and enjoyable. The quality and range of the buffet, friendly attentive bar team and overall atmosphere made it a very memorable occasion. Thanks guys.”

“Saturday afternoon, was expecting a vibe. About as much atmosphere as a damp lettuce leaf. A pub that doesn't really know what it wants to be. Staff who serve drinks but have the engagement of aforesaid lettuce leaf. So many better venues within a very short walk. Thank you for your attention in this matter.”

“Used the Ape and Apple for a work meeting, Ryan and the team could not have been more helpful. The upstairs function room was prefect for our full day meeting, the food was fantastic and the tea, coffee and water provided was perfect. Being away from the office really enabled us to focus on the agenda for the day rather than being distracted by work stuff and was a great place to decompress after the meeting. Will definitely be back.”

“First time trying after the marathon and the pub was very busy almost left but managed to get a table upstairs. Didn’t order food as a massive wait but looked decent. TVs had City game on and the sound too so that was a bonus. We’re not in city centre often but will try again for food when we are.”

“A month ago, I would have rated this place as 5 star or more with no complaints. But recently, they have gotten rid of a really nice, varied pub menu, and replaced it with Smash'd Burger slop, that on the menu and propaganda pieces calls itself "A Pub Kitchen Experience" which is clearly something a deluded excutive at JW Lees had ChatGPT spit out for them. There's nothing remotely Pub Kitchen about this sad excuse for a new menu, and the only experience I had was being disappointed and ripped off. On the old menu, I could get a really good quality burger that had nicely sized double patties, decent trimmings, toasted bun, and fries (or the thick double buttermilk breaded chicken burger with bacon), and now, they expect patrons to pay the same price for a pathetic little double burger with the same amount of meat as one of the old single patties, on what looks and tastes like a bun out of a bag of 20 from B&M Bargains. It's food I'd expect to get at a cheap neighbour's rained-out garden party for free than at a city centre pub expecting me to pay £13 for the privilege, and fries are not included in the price anymore. A real shame. The staff are wonderful, it's such a nice pub, with a nice range of drinks (that were, I'll be honest, always extortionately priced, but that's Manhester City centre for you), but the main reason me and my group went in was the pub lunch. I'll go back when this imposed scheme inevitably fails and they're serving decent food at a good price again. Until then, there's plenty of other places to eat not charging stupid prices for these Playmobil-sized insults. If I wanted this gentrified nonsense, I'd go to Burgergasm in Picadilly Gardens, and even there, I'd get a much larger portion with fries included.”
