About Speedboat Bar

Speedboat Bar is a Thai restaurant in London's Chinatown at 30 Rupert St, set up as a late-night Bangkok Chinatown canteen. The kitchen cooks tom yum noodles in a creamy seafood version, and a crispy pork and black pepper curry sits among the pork dishes. The dessert list includes mango pudding. Drinks are ordered at the bar, where Singha beer is on draught. Tables sit close together, and a service charge is added to the bill.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often return for the tom yum noodles, described as rich and creamy, though one reviewer found the creamy tom yum overpoweringly sour with lime. Close behind are the crunchy chicken mango salad, the fried seabream, pork and prawn roll with its homemade sauce, and the fried pineapple pie dessert. Reviewers also mention the crispy sweetcorn fritters, red roast pork with lime and chilli, and a prawn ceviche that comes very spicy. Service is usually called friendly and helpful, with waiters advising on heat level and how much to order, and several suggest reserving ahead because the room gets busy and loud. The recurring complaint is value: reviewers call it overpriced, with small portions, a lot of ice in cocktail glasses, and an expensive carafe of wine. Others mention a crispy egg noodle dish that came over-fried and saucy, a crispy pork starter that arrived cold, and one table where a missed rice order and a slow bill ended with a service charge added. One diner who spilled a drink was given a replacement on the house.

“A friend and I decided to go to Speedboat on a random Monday mostly because Kiln had a 50min wait and boy am I happy we did. We spent a ridiculous amount but we had a fab time. The staff were lovely and helpful (even though at times we were asked the same question by two different people: minor inconvenience for the food really). The food was delicious. I am a huge fan of the fried seabeam, pork and prawn roll (and the homemade sauce that comes with it...which I asked to take home) and the pineapple pie. We were skeptical of the pineapple pie at first because the mango pudding was so good and one of the hostesses said we could have it free if we didn't like it. Unfortunately, we enjoyed it so much we had to pay for it.”

“Speedboat Bar completely lived up to the massive social media hype! The food was fantastic and packed with punchy, authentic Thai flavours—from the crispy sweetcorn fritters to the comforting seafood Tom Yum noodles and that incredible fried pie dessert with ice cream. Washing it all down with fresh Singha beer on draught made it even better. It’s vibrant, loud, and easily one of the best spots in town for a casual party or group night out. A massive shoutout to Stefan and Sunita for taking such great care of us—their warm hospitality and fantastic service made the night extra special. It gets super busy, so definitely make a reservation in advance. Can't wait to come back!”

“Long story short, delicious food, overpriced, poor service. 3 stars because the food was good. One star minus because the food is way overpriced and portions are small. I understand this is not Thailand and London is expensive especially the rent but the same bowl you can get in Bangkok for approx. 7 GBP at the original Jeh O Chula. Another minus was the confusing service. We were served by two waitresses. The first asked if we would like to have extra rice and we said yes. She brought the food and we startet eating. A second waitress brought us a wrong dish, some fried stuff. We told her that it's not ours and that we were waiting for the rice instead. She just disappeared and never brought the rice or informed somebody to bring us the rice - it's not like that you have to catch, kill and cook the rice for hours.. As we almost finished eating we told the 1. waitress that the rice never came and we don't want it anymore. We then asked the second waitress for the bill, after 10 minutes nothing happened. So we asked the first waitress again for the bill which then finally came with 12,5% service charge on top which I would not have paid otherwise.”

“Based on my experience, I’ve found a lot of the Southeast and East Asian food I’ve tried in London to be a bit underwhelming compared to what I’m used to, but this was by far the biggest disappointment. I’ve eaten at plenty of Thai restaurants over the years and have also traveled in Southeast Asia. I know it’s not fair to compare every restaurant to food from the region itself, but there are still certain expectations, and unfortunately this meal fell far short. We started with the crispy pork appetizer, and it arrived cold. If it’s intended to be served that way, that’s fine, but it honestly felt like it had been sitting out for a while rather than being freshly prepared. The biggest letdown was the creamy tom yum. Tom yum is one of my favorite dishes, so I was really excited to try it. Unfortunately, all I could taste was an overwhelming amount of lime. It was so sour that it completely overpowered the other flavors, and the creamy texture made it even harder to enjoy. It didn’t have the balanced spicy, savory, and aromatic flavors I normally expect from tom yum, and I struggled to finish it. The green Thai tea was okay, but nothing memorable. Overall, this was one of the most disappointing Thai meals I’ve had, and I wouldn’t return.”

“Excellent, authentic, Thai food. A little pricey for what it is (meal came to just over £50 a head including non alcoholic drinks and service) but about as good as it gets for London. Been to the one on Portabello Road and quality is just as good. Waiter was helpful and friendly. Vibe of the place is casual. Some of the dishes are super spicy - such as the prawn ceviche! (and we were warned too)”
