About Watan - Afghani & Pakistani Restaurant Tooting

Watan is a family-run Afghan restaurant in Tooting, London, at 180 Upper Tooting Rd, and it is the first Watan Restaurant, dating to 1994. The kitchen is open, so guests can watch the Watan grills being cooked over a traditional charcoal grill. The mixed grill brings beef, lamb and chicken cuts with rice and a large Afghan naan, and the platters are meant for sharing. Kabuli Palaw and mantu, lamb dumplings with yogurt and lentils, sit on a menu that also covers Pakistani cooking, including curries, biryanis and vegetarian dishes. All of the food is halal. A private dining room is available for groups. A small salad plate comes to the table once guests are seated. A free car park at the back allows 90 minutes.

Customer Review Summary

Mixed grills and sharing platters draw the most praise, with reviewers describing generous portions, well-marinated beef, lamb and chicken, and a huge Afghan naan alongside the rice. Close behind, diners single out the Kabuli Palaw as tender and flavourful, along with the mantu, chapli kebab, nihari, prawn biriyani, peshwari naan and mango lassi. Several mention a spicy kick and nice decor. The complaints are specific. A vegetarian diner on a fourth visit found the paneer curry had no gravy and no salt, and said the chicken karhai was overcooked and both dishes oily. The server then offered only daal or saag, explaining the food was pre-cooked. Another reviewer felt the 1kg lamb charsi karahi looked closer to 600g, though the flavour was good. Lamb chops were called chewy and the long flat bread dry, and two reviewers find the dining area smoky, particularly in the evening. Service is often praised, and one group of 13 recalls a waiter writing names next to each order so every plate reached the right person.

“I visited Watan Restaurant in Tooting today with my family. We ordered a mixed platter and the 1kg Lamb Charsi Karahi, which was advertised and charged at £46. The mixed platter was enjoyable, and I have no complaints about the flavour of the karahi, it tasted good. However, the portion size was extremely disappointing. The dish that arrived looked nowhere near 1kg of lamb. Based on what was served, I genuinely believed it was closer to around 600g. We raised our concerns with the staff, but they insisted that this was their standard 1kg portion. Unfortunately, that response didn’t give us any confidence. When you’re paying £46 for a dish specifically described as containing 1kg of meat, you expect the quantity to match what’s advertised. The food itself was good, but value for money and honesty about portion sizes are just as important. Sadly, this experience left us feeling disappointed, and because of that, I won’t be returning. I hope the restaurant reviews its portion sizes or is more transparent about what customers are actually receiving.”

Only thing I felt the lamb chops were chewy but the rice & other meat were delicious 😋 and very spicy ! Down stairs toilets were clean There is a 90 minute free car park at the back .”

“Highly recommend the mantu (lamb dumplings topped with yogurt and lentils) for starters and very flavourful mixed grill for 2 persons, the grill comes with several different types of beef and lamb cuts and chicken, as well as rice and a huge Afghan naan bread. Very flavourful and beautifully marinated. The strawberry mojito was also tops. Nice decor, good atmosphere. It's great being able to see the food being cooked in the open kitchen.”

“Variety of fragrant spiced rices, naans, meats and fresh salad. For a sharing platter, could have had more meat to rice ratio, but otherwise plenty of food to go round! Shoutout to the chapli kebab, really delicious, juicy and flavourful - surprisingly favourite dish of many different palates.”

“Amazing Food and Superb Service! We had a fantastic experience at Watan in Tooting. From the moment we walked in, the service was absolutely superb, the staff were incredibly welcoming, attentive, and made us feel right at home throughout the entire meal. The food was amazing across the board, but the absolute standout was the Kabuli Palaw. It was cooked to perfection, incredibly flavorful, and beautifully tender. If you are in Tooting, this place is a must-visit. Excellent service and delicious, authentic food. We will definitely be back!”
