About The Golden Chip of Hanwell
Queues outside are part of how The Golden Chip of Hanwell works, a family-owned fish and chips takeaway on Boston Rd in London, where a member of staff comes out to take orders from those waiting, particularly on Friday evenings. Fish and chips is the mainstay, with the fish in a crisp batter and the chips cut by hand, available in a small portion for lighter appetites. Haddock is one of the fish options, scampi can be ordered alongside, and curry sauce comes as an accompaniment. The counter runs on walk-ins, with 44 dishes in total across the menu. The owner works the shop with a team of staff. There is no seating on site, so orders go out for collection, and a bakery next door handles dessert. It opens Monday to Saturday and closes on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers come for the fish and chips, and the crisp, light batter on fresh, flaky fish is what they raise most, with haddock named specifically. Close behind are the hand cut, golden chips and the scampi, which one diner calls a big hit. A couple of reviewers praise the curry sauce, and one says the food is not greasy. Staff come across as friendly and welcoming even in the mealtime rush, and the family owners are singled out for their smiles. One reviewer also mentions a dessert from the bakery next door. The main complaint is portion size: a returning customer found a small portion of chips comically small, smaller than the span of a hand, for the money. Others note a queue, especially on Friday nights, and one points out there is no seating, though another was served quickly despite the crowd. On busy evenings, one of the staff comes outside to take orders from those waiting.

“This was one of the best fish and chip dinners i have ever had in my life and my parents could not agree more. The stuff were so lovely and made us feel so welcome from the the moment we walked in. Along with going next door to the bakery to grab a dessert, where the stuff were amazing and so kind also. We are all looking forward to coming back very soon.”

“Fantastic local fish and chips. Based on how busy it was I feared a long wait, but we were served really quickly and the food followed not long afterwards. Delicious, flaky fish with crispy batter. Tasty fresh chips. And the scampi was a big hit too. Even our cat agreed!”

“First time visiting today. I've been wanting a good chippy nearby and I AM SO PLEASED. staff were super friendly and helpful. Food was absolutely delicious. I will definitely be back. 10/10”

“We had takeaway fish and chips last night. It was freshly cooked. The batter was as crisp as it could possibly be and I honestly don't think there's another chippy in England to beat this place. Archie is the beaming owner with a bevy of lassies helping him on busy evenings. It is well run. There is often a queue outside especially on Friday nights and one of the girls comes out to take orders from those waiting. It is absolutely worth the wait.”
