About Brasserie Zedel

Brasserie Zedel is a French restaurant at 20 Sherwood St in London, set in a 1930s building with an Art Deco interior beneath the ZL Café. A live band plays in the evenings and at weekend lunchtimes, so the music runs alongside the meal. The kitchen works through classic French brasserie dishes, among them Pâté En Croûte, choucroute and steak frites with garlic butter. A set menu of two or three dishes is also offered, and bread comes to the table. The menu lists two dishes in its current listing. Table reservations are time-limited to 90 minutes.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the Art Deco building itself, calling the interior beautiful and a throwback in time, with a live band adding to the vintage feel. Of the food, French onion soup draws the warmest praise, described as rich and well balanced. The cold leek soup and a peppercorn steak are also singled out as heavenly and succulent. Steak frites, mussels, tartare and lemon and apple tarts get favorable mentions, though a few call the food simply tasty and decent rather than outstanding. Service is described repeatedly as friendly, helpful and attentive. The complaints are specific. Fries arrived lukewarm, the table bread struck one diner as dry, and another found the dessert less fresh than the rest. One diner objects to separate charges for sauces on top of a service charge. The room is described as very loud and busy, with time-limited tables. One reviewer reports a piece of plastic in a pâté en croûte, and another describes a dirty women's bathroom with water everywhere. One couple celebrating seven years together had the waiter bring a decorated dessert plate.

“Coming here right after seeing Moulin Rouge was the perfect choice, the stunning Parisian Art Deco setting gave the entire evening a natural and memorable continuation. A special thanks to Daniel and Hari, who were exceptional throughout our meal. They were fast, reliable, answered all our questions, and gave spot-on menu recommendations. The savory dishes were delicious and beautifully prepared. If there is any room for improvement, the bread served at the table was a bit dry and hard, and the dessert did not feel quite as fresh or house-made as the rest of the meal. That said, the overall ambiance and five-star service made it a fantastic night out.”

“Nice food. Not "amazing" but tasty. Friendly, helpful service. Very loud - maybe due to design of the building - and very busy with waiting staff and customers always rushing around. Time-limited table reservations (90 minutes).”

“We have dined here a few times now and have enjoyed consistently decent meals. Today we had the steak frites with garlic butter. Basic and pretty good. Fries were lukewarm to borderline cold. The complimentary French bread was good and fresh. Wines were fine. Great interiors that's like a throwback in time. The lighting is a little cool and I think if they used warmer lighting it would enhance the atmosphere tremendously - just my opinion. Overall it's a great place and we will continue to revisit this well established destination restaurant.”

“A Parisian Art Deco restaurant serving classic French brasserie dishes, located in a 1930s building beneath the ZL Café on Piccadilly. The atmosphere is great; a live band plays in the evenings and also at lunchtime on weekends. The menu features a range of dishes, including French classics such as escargots, coq au vin, choucroute, and boeuf bourguignon. Unfortunately, my Pâté en Croûte came with a piece of plastic. That wasn't so nice. The service was very friendly and attentive.”

“What an breathtaking place!! Truly beautiful interior, live music was a fantastic addition 🫶🏻 We chose set menu with 3 dishes - we recommend cold leek soup (heavenly good, super creamy great on a hot days), steak with peppercorn sauce- very succulent and juicy. We added chips on a side but the bread on the table would have been enough. We tried both options for a deserts and it was delicious! The waiter asked what we celebrate and we said 7 years of love haha and he brought us a nicely decorated plate with a yummy dessert. Can’t fault this place we definitely will be back to try more food in there. Thank you for making our lunch even more special ♥️”
