About Ben’s Traditional Fish & Chips

Ben's Traditional Fish & Chips is a fish and chips restaurant on Shaftesbury Ave in London, offering both eat-in and takeaway meals. The menu runs to 56 dishes, with cod used for the fish and chips that most diners order. Tables are served by waitstaff, and outdoor seating extends the dining room onto the street, alongside indoor seating for those who prefer to sit in. High chairs are available for visitors with young children. The restaurant opens daily with no booking system, so guests are seated on a walk-in basis. Its position in a prime tourist stretch of London makes it a straightforward stop for a sit-down meal or food to go. For those not staying to eat, the takeaway option lets meals be carried off site.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips is the clear draw here, with reviewers repeatedly praising the crispy, light batter and moist, flaky fish, and several calling the cod one of the best versions of the dish they've had in London. The chips come in for praise too, described as golden and properly textured, though one reviewer found them tasteless despite adding salt and another found the meal filling but not especially flavorful. Portions are consistently called generous, sometimes too large to finish, and pricing (around 16.50 to 18.50 pounds for fish and chips) is seen as fair given the tourist-area location, though a couple of reviewers flag it as slightly high. Service draws frequent praise for being fast, warm, and welcoming, with one diner noting staff accommodated a request for outdoor seating by setting up an extra table when none was free. One reviewer reports a disappointing visit that didn't meet their expectations, without further detail.

On Sunday 31st-May-2026, a friend of mine and I went to this restaurant around 4PM. We had no reservation, but most of the tables were empty, so it was not a problem. There were tables both inside and outside the restaurant (we got one outside). We ordered the following: ► 2 bottles of water (2,50£ each) ► 1 plain sausage with chips (8£) ► 1 fish with chips (18,50£) The total cost was 31,50£ (price per person = 15,75£). The amount of food was very decent (actually, I was not able to finish my food, as I was feeling very stuffed). However, the quality felt a bit low in my opinion. The taste of the sausage didn't convince me 100% and the chips were a bit tasteless despite the salt I added to them. Still, I guess this quality is paired with the cost of the food, as the price was not that high compared to what you would usually find in an expensive city like London. Also, I really want to highlight how kind and professional the waitresses were with us: they provided fast service and they made sure we had everything we needed. They made me feel very comfortable at the place. I will add picture of the food and the list of available dishes. Thanks for the service! 😁

Amazing fish and chips! The fish was fresh, crispy, and delicious. The owner told us they change the oil every day and use fresh fish delivered daily, which really shows in the quality and taste. Very friendly service as well. Highly recommended!

I really loved the fish and chips — the fish was super fresh and the chips were crispy but also soft at the same time. Portion of the fish and chips was super decent! The staff were also extremely welcoming and friendly!

Ben’s Fish & Chips has easily become one of my favorite spots in London. The food is consistently excellent—crispy, perfectly cooked fish and chips done just right. What really makes this place stand out, though, is the service. Huge thanks to Jay, Sabita, and Anisa for their warmth and attentiveness. They genuinely make you feel welcome and looked after. We had requested an outdoor table, and even though they were unavailable, Anisa took the initiative and requested to set up an additional table and stools for us, which we really appreciated. I can confidently say this is one of the best fish & chips spots in London, and I already know it’s something I’ll miss when I head back to Asia. If you’re in the area, don’t skip it.
