About The English Grill

The English Grill is a restaurant inside The Rubens at the Palace hotel at 39 Buckingham Palace Rd in London. The royal-themed dining room has chandeliers, polished silver and a glass wall that lets guests see into the kitchen. Steaks and a cherry pancake dessert are flambéed at the table. Beef Wellington is served at dinner only, and a two-course set menu is offered at dinner as well. The wine list includes a selection from Bouchard Finlayson, the restaurant's sister vineyard in South Africa, and cocktails are on the menu too. Breakfast centres on a continental buffet of fresh fruit, pastries, yogurt and smoothies, with a full English breakfast, french toast and a mushroom spinach cheese omelette on the menu. The restaurant holds two AA Rosettes and received the OpenTable Diners' Choice Award in 2019.

Customer Review Summary

The complaints centre on cost. One longtime breakfast guest feels the quality has dropped since 2019 and no longer justifies the high price, while another was surprised by an added 15% service charge on the bill. A manager congratulating a couple on their anniversary and returning to the table to check on them is a moment one reviewer recalls.

“The service here was exceptional. As a reactive celiac, I was completely taken care of with my needs for my food to be gluten free. Shukri took care of our breakfasts for our entire stay and she was so kind and attentive. We would definitely eat here and stay here again.”

“The food was excellent, the service was friendly, accommodating, and very helpful and the dining room itself was absolutely gorgeous. We were served by mainly the same people over the course of a week and collectively they did a fantastic job. Shukri, a member of the staff, took especially excellent care of us every time we dined. She was extremely friendly, very nice, very accommodating, and just an overall sweet and lovely person. I would return for the entire experience anytime!”

“We ate breakfast here most days during our stay and each day was delicious! From the moment you arrive, the friendly service team makes sure the meal experience is enjoyable. They offer a wide variety of teas and coffees, ginger shots, green smoothies and other healthy offerings. The fruit was always fresh and the service was impeccable. Thank you for helping each morning start off so pleasantly! Well done, breakfast crew!”

“We have been coming here for breakfast since 2019 when we first stayed at the hotel for nostalgia purposes. In 2019, the breakfast was amazing. The continental portion spread was very impressive. We feel that for the high cost, the quality of food (breakfast) has really gone down and can’t justify the cost. Please bring back how it used to be!! Service is always impeccable.”

“After finishing a long day of touring, we were looking to find a place nearby that we could grab a great last night in London dinner. We found a listing for The English Grill and the quick-scan reviews were good so we went over to see if we could get a table. We walked in not knowing it was a more "elegant" restaurant but stayed the course after they had a table available. We felt a little out of place, but the service staff were very gracious and attentive. The menu was very good but the prices, as could be expected, were on the high side. We each selected the 2-course meal but added a chicken noodle soup (really good) and mashed potatoes. Add in a glass of wine for me and some still water and our bill stood at 228.85 British Pounds. One downside which I did not catch until after we left and could digest the receipt was the added 15% service charge. In our trip to France and most recently to UK, I had not seen that and it added ~29 pounds to the bill. Outside of that service charge, the experience and food were great.”

Good to know

“Opulently designed with a rich royal theme of grandeur with polished silver, beautiful chandeliers and waiters offering traditional service at its most welcoming. Experience the finest of dining with a glass wall which allows guests to catch some of the action taking place in the kitchen. Using the finest English produce and suppliers that serve the Queen's kitchen, the dining experience is accompanied by an extensive wine list including a fine selection from Bouchard Finlayson, our sister vineyard in South Africa. The English Grill was awarded OpenTable Diners' Choice Award 2019 and was holds two AA Rosettes.”
