About Aloo Tama Nepalese Restaurant

Aloo Tama Nepalese Restaurant is a Nepalese restaurant at 18 Greencoat Row in Westminster, London, where guests bring their own drinks to the dine-in room. The name comes from aloo tama, a potato and bamboo shoot curry on the menu. Momos come steamed, in jhol, in chilli or pan-fried versions, and pork jheer is served as skewers. A vegan menu sits alongside the main list, so plant-based diners have their own dishes to choose from. The restaurant opens daily. A food truck in Merchant Square, Paddington, gives a second place to find the kitchen's Nepalese cooking.

Customer Review Summary

Momos draw the most mentions, from steamed ones with spicy red chutney to chilli momos with a tangy kick, pan fried vegan momos, and jhol momo. Close behind is the pork jheer, described as perfectly charred, succulent skewers, and a few reviewers name it alongside the momos. Others single out the chatpate for its crunch, the smoky mutton sekuwa, the mutton choila, the shyaphaley starter, the chicken curry, and the aloo tama potato and bamboo shoot curry, called hearty and sour. Reviewers describe the food as authentic and fresh, and several call the prices reasonable for Central London. The staff and the owner are repeatedly described as welcoming, friendly, and hospitable, and one reviewer notes a fully vegan menu. The main dissent comes from one diner who found the taste average and the portions modest for the cost, calling the rice serving far too small for a Nepali meal. Another reviewer says the jhol momo reminded them of the ones they used to have in Nepal.

“Food taste was average – nothing special but pleasant enough. The atmosphere was nice and comfortable, service was friendly and attentive throughout our visit. My main feedback is on portions: as part of Nepali dining culture, rice is such an important part of the meal, but the serving we got was far too small. Portions in general felt quite modest, and for the prices charged, I expected something more generous. The cost feels a little high for what you actually receive. Overall it’s a decent spot, but they really need to adjust portion sizes – especially rice – to match both the culture and the price point.”

After a long day trip, we were starving and craving Nepali food, so we were incredibly happy to find this place. The food was delicious, comforting, and exactly what we needed. Highly recommended!” The owner Mr Kay was really good and hospitable by offering us their best dishes.”
